Promote the Nursing Department as an educational leader in veterinary nursing. Provide leadership across all departments, ensuring compliance relating to the practice of veterinary medicine and the hospital standards of care. Create an environment of teamwork in which quality medicine is delivered. Play a pivotal role in helping to fulfill the organization’s mission, vision, and direction for the practice. Be a change agent and make changes pertinent to current trends in the veterinary nursing field.
Responsibilities:
- Monitor and supervise veterinary nursing staff to ensure adherence to all policies and procedures. Develop and implement new policies/procedures as needed to ensure that all standards of veterinary nursing care are upheld. Communicate new notification/policies to nursing staff through effective communication avenues.
- Partner with the training department to ensure all staff receive the training required to safely perform their role and to aid them in advancing their skills and knowledge related to veterinary medicine and their chosen career path.
- Partner with the hospital trainers to evaluate, develop, implement, and maintain a process for managing skill development of nursing/technical staff.
- Work with Nursing Supervisors to develop, mentor, and monitor performance of nursing/technical staff.
- Work with Nursing Supervisors to manage staff challenges including conflict management, performance improvements plans, action plans and disciplinary actions.
- Proactively engage in ongoing professional development. Remain current on changes/trends in veterinary nursing field and share learnings regularly with Nursing Supervisors
- Assist Hospital Administration with staff and resource management to successfully maintain the technical staff budget and salaries. Assist with budget preparation annually.
- Conduct outreach and develop and maintain relationships with all colleges and universities that offer the Veterinary Technician degree.
- Collaborate with HR and Nursing Supervisors to select qualified staff for the department (i.e. work interviews). Participate in the interview process as appropriate.
- Model the organizational mission and core values.
- Build and maintain respectful, positive working relationships with staff, doctors, supervisors, and the public using the principles of good customer service.
- Coordinate operational and marketing efforts with the Hospital Administrator, Medical Director, and other leadership team members.
- Enforce hospital policies while on the floor and act as an example for the rest of the staff, regardless of department.
- Provide effective conflict resolution as needed, coaches and participates in giving and receiving direct feedback.
- Host regular Nursing Supervisors staff meetings and hold Nursing Supervisors accountable for having regular meetings with their respective staff.
- Supervise and conduct performance reviews of Nursing Supervisors.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years’ experience or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required.
- 7-10 years of managing veterinary technicians in a hospital setting is strongly preferred.
- Current Veterinary Technician License required.
- Strong Leadership and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively with stakeholders across the hospital including non-medical departments (e.g., finance, facilities, client services, human resources.)
- Comfortable leading efforts to attract, recruit, hire and retain veterinary hospital staff.
- Strong analytical and conceptual thinking skills
- Strong computer skills and ability to learn internal software systems.
- Maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality with both internal and external clients.
