DT Preparatory Academy School bus drivers pick up students at stops along established routes and drop them off at school, making a return trip from school to the assigned stop when transporting home. They may also transport students and faculty to special events, such as field trips or sporting events. School bus drivers are typically employed during the school calendar year, often working split shifts of mornings and afternoons. Drivers are offered competitive pay depending on credentials, bus assignment, and experience.
Duties
School bus drivers must be attentive to traffic and weather conditions while staying on schedule and ensuring the safety of passengers.
- Ensure vehicles are operating properly each day by performing a pre-trip inspection, testing brakes, tires, lights, and other components.
- Maintain a safe environment within the bus by enforcing rules of conduct.
- Properly respond to emergencies.
- Keep track of the amount of fuel used, number of students transported and miles driven.
- Submit vehicle fuel and milage reports, student conduct violations (referrals), and vehicle maintenance discrepancies promptly to administration.
School Bus Driver RequirementsTraining
There are no formal educational requirements for school bus drivers. Those seeking this position must obtain a commercial driver's license as well as a passenger and school bus endorsement. School bus drivers typically must complete a formal training program.
- The successful candidate will have completed a formal training program, generally consisting of both didactic and practical instruction, to serve in the occupation.
- A clean DMV record demonstrating the learned ability to obey basic federal and state rules and regulations, as well as clerical and customer service skills is also required.
- Candidates may be required to complete driving exercises, such as turning, parking and controlling the bus as part of the hiring process.
Commercial Driver's License
School bus drivers are required to hold commercial driver's licenses (CDLs), obtained through the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles. Drivers may also be subject to background checks, physicals, and random drug screenings.
Endorsements
These endorsements, mandated by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, should be current and clearly visible on the successful candidate's Operator's License and / or documented on the Florida Driving Record (with necessary update to operator's license being made before official hire).
- Passenger endorsement "P" (for large passenger buses)
- School bus endorsement "S" (for yellow school buses with stop arm)
