General Purpose
Fosters student success by providing academic advisement for all students. Academic Advisor will have functional knowledge of programs and services offered by Davis Technical College to help students be successful. Areas of knowledge may include financial aid and scholarships, assessment of prior learning, Veterans’ benefits, Americans with Disabilities Act, training programs, related occupations, and established pathways with educational partners. The Academic Advisor is responsible for identifying and coordinating resources and appropriate services required to relieve potential barriers to success prior to and during the student’s educational journey
Job Focus
- Provides career guidance and advisement regarding all areas of Student Services.
- Assist students in understanding progress and attendance.
- Provides advisement to students and potential students by assisting with issues such as satisfactory performance, conflict resolution, ADA-related services, Veterans’ benefits, and resources.
- Serves as an intermediary for communication with staff, faculty, and others up to the point of program enrollment.
- Acts as mentor/advocate for potential students, providing support through positive communication and problem resolution.
- May assist Recruiters by meeting with potential students and providing tours and program information.
- Assists students in connecting with the Basic Needs Advisor for additional resources beyond those available or provided by the College.
- Provides support to instructors for outreach to students who have left the program for any reason other than graduation.
- Works cooperatively with community agencies, organizations, and CTE Coordinators to improve student retention.
- Fosters relationships with secondary and higher education partners to guide students through pathways toward stackable credentials.
- Provides qualitative and quantitative documentation of outreach to students in all areas.
- Management of incoming phone calls and email inquiries, including guiding other staff in communicating inquiries with key staff.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree required.
- A minimum of two years experience directly related to
- advising.
- Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
- Develop effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and students.
- Work independently and manage work assignments.
- Deal effectively with stress caused by workload and time deadlines.
- Perform with attention to detail and follow through.
- Proficiency with computers and various software systems is required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience in the K-12 system or higher education institution preferred.
