Purpose: The mission of St. Vincent Meals on Wheels (SVMOW) is to prepare and deliver nutritious meals to homebound seniors and other vulnerable residents across Los Angeles regardless of age, illness, disability, race, religion, or ability to pay. The program operates Monday-Saturday and Holidays. SVMOW adheres to the following Vincentian core values: Respect, Compassionate Service, Simplicity, Advocacy for the Poor, and Inventiveness to Infinity. The Director of Development is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing St. Vincent Meal on Wheel’s fundraising including, the major gifts program (Circle of Angels), annual campaigns, legacy giving, special events and capital campaigns. The Director works closely with The Executive Director in all development and fund-raising endeavors.
Essential Duties:
· Meet prospective donors and supporters on a continual basis to establish effective communications with them.
· Grow the major gifts program including identification, cultivation and solicitation of major donors.
· Grow corporate partners, corporate giving and volunteerism.
· Oversee grant writer and grant seeking including research, proposal writing, and reporting requirements. Meet with the grant writer once a month.
· Obtain review and approval of all proposals and grant submissions from program staff prior to submission to ensure feasibility of program capacity to meet promised deliverables.
· Build the planned giving program with a focus on deferred gifts such as bequest expectancies. Cultivate potential legacy gifts donors within the existing donors in the database.
· Oversee the annual fund campaigns, including printed mailings, eblasts and annual fundraising campaigns.
· Oversee capital campaigns and other major fundraising drives. Work with auxiliary groups to drive fundraising efforts. Establish new auxiliary group such as men’s group.
· Encourage and coordinate smaller fundraising events motivated individuals and corporations.
· Oversee prospective research. Work closely and communicate effectively with the Executive Director, and Board of Directors within scope of fund development.
· Public appearances/accept speaking engagements that are related to the promotion of upcoming fundraising special events, fundraising campaigns with the community. Be ready to talk about the program with updated numbers, sharing our stories and invite people to tour the kitchen and Hotel Dieu.
· Oversee fundraising database and tracking systems. Work closely and communicate effectively with Data team.
· Supervise and collaborate with other fundraising staff.
· Brainstorm with marketing/PR/Direct mail vendors about publications (printed and online) and oversee the project.
· Maintain gift recognition programs including personal call to supporter and hand-written “thank you” cards.
· Always demonstrate professional conduct and positive behavior.
· Train new staff for overview of development and fundraising process including their role in fundraising.
· Perform other related duties as requested by the Executive Director.
· Effective communication with Fund Development vendors which includes direct mail vendors, grant writer, Planned Giving contractor, PR and online giving contractor.
· Strong communication with current Development Staff especially with the development operations manager but be open to communicating building relationship with the entire development team.
· Engage and build relations with all SVMOW departments and staff.
· Engage and build relationships with local politicians, celebrities (those that believe in our mission). The most effective way is to invite them to the kitchen.
· Attending local chamber events and network with local vendors and small businesses.
· Sign up to drive/deliver meals at least once a month and sign up to help pack meals at least during the holidays this not only builds relationship with other staff members but gives you an opportunity to walk their shoes, know the heart of the program first-hand and opportunity to meet the people we serve on route.
· Understand, know and be willing to pitch in the work of the development team.
· Build your own network of restaurants, donors, businesses, individuals, and create your own database of network (on excel)
· Have a positive, friendly, and engaging personality. Positive and genuine energy goes a long way with supporters and staff.
· Embrace the mission of the organization and be genuine when communicating and telling the story of SVMOW.
· Support the Executive Director and make sure that DD and ED are aligned and united when making hard and important decisions about the development department.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
· A bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications or related field required. CFRE (Certified Fundraising Executive) certificate preferred
· Seven years minimum experience in professional fundraising.
· Strong interpersonal and writing skills.
· Have knowledge and experience in fund raising techniques, particularly major gift fundraising.
· The ability to work with diverse staff and volunteers in a team environment.
· The ability to work collaboratively both internally and externally.
· Ability to prioritize tasks and organize work flow.
· Ability and initiative to self- initiate donor visits and fundraising calls.
· Strong attention to detail
· Able to read and follow directions, road maps, and/or other instructions.
· Valid California Driver’s License and clear DMV record.
· Background Fingerprint Clearance
· Drug Test Clearance
Physical Requirements:
The performance of duties involves working in both an office environment and in the community (various event venues) and the physical abilities to perform for hours while on your feet at events as well as to work for extended periods of time at a desk/computer. Event coordination may require occasional lifting/moving of objects of 30 pounds or more.
