In this role, the Unicasting Tooling Engineer will define and deliver next-generation Unicasting high pressure die casting dies in support of future-model vehicle programs. Successful candidates will have a proven record of working with cross functional teams in the development and implementation of dies for large structural aluminum high pressure die castings.
The Unicasting Tooling Engineer will be responsible for defining and implementing the die cast tooling, from early program planning through program launch. In this role, the tooling engineer will have responsibility for the tooling construction and input into the product design, process development, and bill of process for Unicastings. This process is a new to Ford manufacturing process and must combine both technical and leadership capabilities to drive success. Ideal candidates must navigate and drive change in a complex internal environment, challenging the status quo as we define an all-new way of manufacturing vehicles.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor of Science/Engineering; MBA/MS preferred - Chemical/Electrical/Mechanical or Metallurgy/Materials Science.
- 5+ years prior experience with high pressure die cast tooling, preferably for structural applications.
- Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
- Working level knowledge of high pressure die casting, post processing, and die development processes.
- Experience with the design and construction of large high pressure die cast tooling and trim tooling.
- Knowledge of the maintainability of high pressure die cast dies and trim die tooling.
- Knowledge of tool steel alloys, heat treatment and coatings used for die cast and trim tools for structural aluminum castings.
- Experience with the design and development of conformally cooled inserts and other die cooling strategies.
- Understanding of MagmaSoft or other casting simulation software results.
- Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, how to read drawings and interpret dimensional data.
- Experience with 3D modelling using CATIA, NX or similar software.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to make decisions in a fast paced, dynamic environment.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to present, persuade, and collaborate at all levels of the organization.
- Highly motivated self-starter capable of driving change and influencing engineering decisions, with or without authority.
- Experience performing casting manufacturing feasibility assessments.
- Foundry operational experience in casting manufacturing processes and tooling maintenance and/or construction.
- Proven track record of delivering major product launches in an automotive manufacturing facility.
- Ability to travel both domestically and internationally.
- Travel may be required from 25% - up to 80% of time.
- The lower end means working from home base (Dearborn) with minimum travel to Supplier/Vendors, Test facilities or out of state (of Michigan) Plants/Suppliers.
- The higher end of travel means supporting implementation/launch teams on site at the out of state (of Michigan) Plants/Suppliers. This could require traveling from ~3 months up to ~ 1 ½ years working on-site at a Plant. Per HR guidelines, when supporting out of state you are allowed to travel home every other weekend.
The ability to travel daily to Livonia, MI for the remainder of '24 and 50% in Lousiville, KY (targeting by June '25).
