Job Summary
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Completion of four-year Apprenticeship Program (of which Apprentice Lineperson I is the first year), leads to journeyman level. At level I employees perform groundsperson duties and some work on de-energized poles during new construction.
Examples of work performed: occasionally climbs and frames de-energized poles during new construction; installs and connects single phase house services both overhead and underground; helps set poles; raises tools and equipment to overhead crew members; assists in connecting cross arms and other hardware to poles before erection; may operate motor vehicles up to 4 ton capacity; subject to rotating call-out during emergencies; performs preventive maintenance on equipment; performs related duties as required.
Required Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in electric system construction and maintenance
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions related to electrical distribution systems
Knowledge of basic electricity
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
Ability to work for extended periods in aerial lifts often with arms extended above the head
Ability to operate a motor vehicle up to 4-ton capacity
Ability to administer first aid and CPR in emergencies
Ability to work a flexible schedule due to rotating call-out and during emergencies
Ability to climb utility poles occasionally
Ability to work in adverse weather conditions
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and co-workers
(The level of abilities is expected to continue improving through the 4-year apprenticeship program)
Qualifications:
High school education or equivalent, at least one-year experience as electrical groundsperson or comparable experience, and a Commercial driver's license is required. Completion of a Lineman Training Course from a certified training facility is preferred.
Essential Functions:
Must be able to climb utility poles occasionally and lift 100 pounds occasionally. Must be able to work for extended periods with arms extended above the head. Must be able to work from aerial lifts. Must be able to perform first aid and CPR. Must be able to work a flexible schedule during rotating call-out, during system emergencies, and in all weather extremes.
