Touchstone Living is the largest Nevada-based home builder and was one of the country’s 100 largest home builders in 2023; we are privately owned with our main office located in Las Vegas. Touchstone Living makes homeownership affordable and attainable with our communities being located in prime locations throughout the Las Vegas Valley. We are experiencing tremendous expansion with revenues growing more than 10x over the past three years and expected to approach $200M this year. We own or control nearly 2,000 home sites in the Las Vegas market and are actively seeking new development opportunities within and outside Nevada.
Given our growth plans, we are seeking an experienced accounting leader with strong people skills to be our Controller. This position provides the analytical foundation for our business plan through the development and execution of accurate and timely reporting, as well as ownership and expertise of our accounting information system NEWSTAR. The right candidate will have excellent communication and leadership skills, understanding that supporting employees’ mentoring and development is as important as technical expertise.
This position is accounting-focused and requires extensive experience, preferably in public accounting. The Controller reports to the Chief Financial Officer while interacting regularly with the President and senior leadership, supporting monthly reporting, variance analysis, explanations, and recommendations. As this individual reports to the CFO and supports the President and senior leaders, s/he must be unequivocally highly professional, reserved, and organized with keen attention to detail, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. CONTROLLER JOB DESCRIPTION
The right candidate will provide leadership to improve company’s accounting, financial, and reporting processes, with daily operational accounting management while maintaining and improving internal controls, regulatory compliance, and financial reports. Primary responsibilities include:
Financial Systems
- Support CFO, President, and senior leadership reporting needs and variance explanations, manage development of recommendations on mitigation plans to achieve annual strategic goals
- Build and develop our accounting team, strengthening cross-training and redundancy processes to ensure cash management, A/P, A/R, vendor payments and support are done on-time, accurately, and efficiently, every time
- Support and partner with finance to streamline and distribute financial reports and loan positions
- Develop, manage, and enhance our NEWSTAR accounting information system
- Benchmark operational best practices and recommend improvements to existing accounting processes
Management and Reporting
- Work regularly with department heads to understand their processes to build and report accounting performance, recommending potential improvements towards higher efficiency and profitability at lower costs
- Lead accounting team and partner with finance to provide weekly, monthly, and annual performance reports on:
o Bank and lender reporting
o Variance analysis (budget vs. actuals, forecast vs. actuals vs. budget)
o Variance explanations and recommendations to resolve and improve financial performance
o Financial statement and job cost reporting
- Comply with all federal, state, local tax laws, and other legal and regulatory requirements
Policy and Procedures
- Expand existing internal control policies and procedures to safeguard assets and accommodate future growth
- Evolve accounting department roles and job descriptions
Audit, Risk Management, Legal, Investor Relationships
- Manage insurance policies and insurance audits. Work closely with insurance broker.
- After financing is secured, manage operational relationship (reporting, loan draws, repayments, etc.)
- Provide due diligence information to current and prospective lenders and investors
KEY QUALIFICATIONS
· 10 years of extensive accounting experience with $100MM+ companies
· Strong preference for candidates with experience in public accounting at Manager or Director level roles
· Homebuilding experience required
· Excellent and superior written and oral communication skills with great ability to develop leaders and employees on the accounting and financial acumen needed to systematically improve performance through higher efficiency operations and leading the development of financial and accounting metrics
· Proven ability to understand, research, and develop recommendations on accounting or financial issues, been able to then communicate those clearly to affected leaders and employees towards resolving them
· Strong computer skills with mastery in Excel; preference to candidates with experience in NEWSTAR ERP software
· Tax planning experience a plus
· CPA preferred
