Female graduate school student (recent college graduate) seeking live-in personal care assistant (PCA) to work with her in New Haven beginning August 2024.
This is a unique opportunity to (1) gain valuable experience providing health care services, working one-on-one in a comfortable setting, (2) live rent-free in a luxury apartment in a desirable neighborhood, and (3) have fun with a graduate student roommate.
The graduate student requiring this PCA has a spinal cord injury and is mostly paralyzed from the chest down. She needs assistance with all activities of daily living. The work of this position will include help in the morning and bedtime, preparation of meals, and helping to care for her beautiful golden-retriever service dog. The work will also include driving student’s handicap accessible vehicle, so a valid driver’s license is a requirement.
Student and her family are leasing an apartment in a beautiful apartment community in East Rock, New Haven. The apartment community includes amenities such as a pool, community events, a fitness center and parking. The PCA will share an apartment (rent-free) with student as part of her compensation. The PCA will have her own room in the apartment her own bathroom. Additional compensation ( to housing) will also be paid. The amount of additional compensation will depend on the extent to which PCA is able to work during the day. Mornings and night-time are a minimum.
The PCA and student will build into the schedule vacations and time off during the week. Student is requesting a 12 month commitment. Slightly longer or shorter commitments may be considered.
This position may be a great fit for a recent graduate in a “gap year” or for a part time student.
Applicants need not have any direct experience in providing personal care services, but relevant experience as a CNA, PCA and/or classes are a plus. Student and her family will train the PCA. Student worked very successfully with PCA’s to live independently in an undergraduate setting, and enjoyed great relationships with her PCA’s during those years.
