MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential Elements
1. Implements a broad range of medically prescribed physical therapy interventions. Implements programs for students, including preschool, school age children, as part of Jawonio`s preschool, summer education and related service programs. Facilitates/implements a broad variety of exercises and therapeutic activities, using physical means such as exercise, stretching, neurodevelopmental techniques, therapeutic handling, massage, as prescribed by physician and as appropriate for educational therapy plans.
2. Prepares various records and documentation of treatments, progress and reactions, and other details as appropriate. May communicate verbally or in writing to other health professionals, family members, and others regarding status of student, supportive activities, justification for equipment and bracing, and other details related to ongoing treatment plans.
3. Discusses with and communicates with other agency professionals’ specific situations regarding students and to contribute to implementation for further therapy as part of their relationship with the agency.
4. Assists with the general maintenance of the physical therapy area, making minor adjustments and repairs to equipment such as wheelchairs, adaptive seats, strollers, and other devices as may be possible.
5. May train, coach, provide motivation and instruction to other agency personnel including teachers, teaches aids, assistants and therapists, and one to one aide to implement exercise programs, supports the student with accessing their educational environment.; works with families, teachers and other staff to incorporate physical therapy goals into their specific programs.
6. May assist with the clinics/meetings for various students, setting up administrative and other details for the running of the physical therapy department, including computer logging, etc. Follows through and tracks attendance to ensure repeats and performs other functions relating to the ongoing education program.
7. Participates in professional staff development meetings, including consultation and discussion with families, education team members and physicians for purposes of developing new therapy paths and to help plan future treatment protocols. May attend meetings with Committee for Preschool Special Education, Committee for Special Education, and parents as appropriate.

8. May assist in the organization and disinfecting (after use) of facilities and clinic areas.
9. May prepare various clerical or administrative records related to the activity of the department.
10. May carry out in-service programs for agency staff.
11. Periodically provides supervision and guidance to Physical Therapy Assistant students, and volunteers.
-Maintains safe, orderly work area and work practices.
-Performs other duties as required.
BACKGROUND/FORMAL EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Associate degree from approved/accredited PT Assistant program plus 2 years’ experience (preferred).
MINIMUM LEARNING TIME: 6 months
INTERRELATIONSHIPS: Important continual contact with consumer and agency professionals. Important but less frequent contact with family and professionals outside the agency such as school district teachers. Actively participate in ongoing meetings/discussions with Physical Therapists regarding case load, modifying plans of care, goals, treatment strategies, and new concerns.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Lifting, pushing, and pulling of equipment and consumer for most of day. May be required to kneel or bend for periods of time, dependent upon the consumer's individual needs.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Valid NYS licensure/certification for physical therapy assistant.
