As a Field/Lab Technician, you’ll be immersed in the field or in the lab on a variety of projects, perform essential testing, collaborate with our team to conduct condition assessments and evaluations, and share in the efforts to deliver our expertise directly to our clients.
The Opportunity:
The projects on which you may be assigned to work include laboratory testing, Department of Transportation (DOT) ancillary structures, and new and existing buildings. Your primary responsibilities will be to perform laboratory testing and/or reviews in the field on various project sites. Laboratory testing may include welder qualifications, anchor rods, load testing of assemblies and components, and ASTM testing of other construction materials. Field reviews may include review and material testing services related to bolted and welded connections, steel deck and steel stud attachments, load testing of anchors, fabrication shop operations, fabrication of structural steel and weldments; or occasionally assisting with concrete, soil, or other testing as needed to support other services groups within SME. This position requires travel to sites throughout Michigan, with consideration given to assigning you to projects close to your base office, and occasional travel to sites outside Michigan. Occasional overtime, weekend work, and out-of- town, overnight travel will be required to meet our clients’ needs.
Responsibilities:
- Perform field testing and specialty reviews on or within building constructions sites, DOT roadway projects, manufacturing facilities, fabrication shops, and other locations.
- Laboratory testing as needed within our Materials Laboratory, including testing of welder performance and procedure qualifications, high strength bolts and anchor rods, load testing of assemblies, etc.
- Occasionally assisting with other service reviews or testing, as needed, to support other groups within SME.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED, and pursuing secondary education (engineering, metallurgical, and/or welding related)
- Proficient with commonly used computer programs and phone apps (e.g. Microsoft word/excel, PDFs, email, web browsers, maps, etc.)
- Structural steel welding knowledge/experience, Building Code QC/QA and/or NDT experience, or similar related experience preferred, but not required.
