Position Summary:
Rice University Controller’s Office tax team seeks a Nonresident Tax Specialist to support the University’s tax compliance and customer service for the international population, including students, scholars, faculty, staff, and vendors. The Nonresident Tax Specialist will be primarily responsible for assisting the management of the University’s foreign national tax software and database for data collection and tax analysis, collaborating with the Payroll, Bursar, Payables, and Human Resources departments in data exchange and updates, preparing and filing tax reports to the various taxing jurisdictions, and providing excellent customer service to individuals and departments for needs related to foreign national tax issues. This position reports to the Tax Director.

The ideal candidate for the Nonresident Tax Specialist position will possess excellent communication and organization skills, have a solid knowledge base in areas such as nonresident alien tax, payroll tax withholdings, and international income tax treaties, and enjoy interactions with individuals and departments while providing tax assistance.
Salary Range:
$70,000 to $80,000
Workplace Requirements:
This position is offered as a hybrid role, combining both in-office and remote work to provide flexibility and support collaboration. Per Rice policy 440 , work arrangements may be subject to change.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Three or more years of experience in higher education finance or payroll/tax compliance.
- In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education above and beyond what is required on an equivalent year-for-year basis may be substituted.

Preferences:
- Five years of experience in higher education finance or payroll/tax compliance
- Prior experience in payroll tax associated with foreign nationals
- Experience with Oracle cloud system
- Experience with Sprintax Calculus tax compliance system
- Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
Essential Functions:
- Engage in projects to improve efficiency and accuracy in tax-related processes and data management.
- Collaborate with the university's other departments to implement tax-related changes, ensuring accurate and timely data management.
- Offer general support to the Controller’s Office as needed, including assisting with audits, participating in meetings, and providing input on various financial matter
- Assist in preparing financial reports by providing accurate tax-related data and analysis. This may include contributing to annual financial statements or reports required by regulatory bodies.
- Participate in reviewing and developing internal policies and procedures relating to tax compliance and data management. Provide insights and recommendations based on best practices and regulatory requirements.
- Engage in projects to improve efficiency and accuracy in tax-related processes and data management.
- Support preparing and filing necessary federal, state, and local tax forms, maintaining data accuracy and integrity
Additional Functions
The Nonresident Tax Specialist will also be responsible for the following tasks in addition to the above-listed core functions:
- Support Financial Reporting: Assist in preparing financial reports by providing accurate tax-related data and analysis. This may include contributing to annual financial statements or reports required by regulatory bodies.
- Contribute to Policy Development: Participate in reviewing and developing internal policies and procedures relating to tax compliance and data management. Provide insights and recommendations based on best practices and regulatory requirements.
- Continuous Improvement Projects: Engage in projects to improve efficiency and accuracy in tax-related processes and data management.
- Provide General Support: Offer general support to the Controller’s Office as needed, including assisting with audits, participating in meetings, and providing input on various financial matters.
