Position: Plumber
Reports to: Plumbing Manager
Supervises: Plumbing Helper
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Assemble, install, and repair pipe, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, and drainage systems, according to specifications and plumbing codes. Must be able to properly operate sewer equipment. Study building plans and work drawings to determine work aids required and sequence of installation. Inspect work site to determine presence of obstructions and to ascertain that holes cut for pipe will not cause structural weakness. Plan installation or repair to avoid obstructions and to avoid interfering with activities of other workers. Work closely with piping superintendent and operations manager in planning execution of job and giving daily feedback on job progress.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Inspect structure to ascertain obstructions to be avoided to prevent weakening of structure resulting from installation of pipe.
- Locate and mark position of pipe and pipe connections and passage holes for pipe in walls and floors, using ruler, spirit level, and plumb bob.
- Cut openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings, using hand tools and power tools.
- Cut and thread pipe, using pipe cutters, cutting torch, and pipe-threading machine. Bend pipe to required angle by us of pipe-bending machine or by placing pipe over block and bending it by hand.
- Assemble and install valves, pipe fittings, and pipe composed of metal, such as iron, steel, brass, and lead, and nonmetals, such as glass, vitrified clay, and plastic using hand tools, and power tools.
- Join pipes by use of screws, bolts, fittings, solder, plastic solvent, and caulk joints. Fill pipe system with water or air and read pressure gauge to determine whether system is leaking.
- Install and repair plumbing fixtures, such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, and water softeners.
- Repair and maintain plumbing by replacing washers in leaky faucets, mending burst pipes, and opening clogged drains.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
- May weld holding fixtures to steel structural members.
- May operate machinery when performing underground work.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Must closely follow safety rules for using hand tools, ladders, and scaffolding. May be required to work on roof-tops, attics, and in crawl spaces. Time spent on job sites would involve the typical safety hazards associated with any construction site.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Stand on feet for long periods of time.
- Lift 90 pounds.
- Work in confined areas.
- Work in extreme heat or cold.
- Work from heights such as scaffolding, ladders, and climb stairs.

- Work around other construction trades, dust, sawdust, insects, fiberglass, and work with sharp metals, welding equipment, and various glues and solvents.
- Obtain hand tools and use them properly and safely.
- Use power tools properly and safely.
- Measure and cut pipe.
- Read blueprints and specifications.
- Obtain Escambia County Gas Journeyman card for gas installations.
- Good driving record (No DUI’s, reckless driving, excessive speeding, etc. within last 3 years).
- React quickly.
- Follow directions.
REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATES
- A minimum of (5) years prior experience in field is necessary.
