MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Certification
A valid certificate/license issued by the Colorado Department of Education, Special Education Generalist. Out of state applicants will be considered if they can qualify for a Colorado license.
Education
Bachelors from an accredited college or university in related discipline applicable to teaching assignment. Candidates must possess a current, initial, or professional Colorado teaching license, Special Education Generalist.
Experience
Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade levels a plus.
SUMMARY
The special education teacher will collaborate with the building administration, other staff, and the district’s Director of Special Education to create an environment favorable to learning and personal growth for ALL students but primarily facilitates learners with identified special needs. Responsibilities include effective rapport with pupils, conducting assessments, developing skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation in accordance with each pupil’s ability, and establishing good relationships and communication with parents and other staff members.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of Individual Education Plans, State and local standards, and curriculum goals. Establishes and communicates clear objectives for all lessons and activities.
2. Provides direct instruction relevant to achieving standards, goals, and objectives. Instruction will address the identified individual needs of each child, and to the greatest extent possible, lessons will be from a district-adopted curriculum, utilizing necessary modifications and accommodations.
3. Provide training for all paraprofessionals on meeting students' needs. Inform all educators of the specifics of the behavioral/crisis management plan.
4. Coordinate services for students with the support staff assigned to the program, and schedule and maintain constant supervision of all paraprofessional staff assigned to the classroom.
5. Assists in setting schedules for special education staff based on numbers of students with priority needs that allow maximum support to those most in need of support services.
6. Assures the administration of the required staffing procedures, testing, recording, and reporting. (This includes training any staff who will be assisting with assessments.)
7. Develops lesson plans that meet the individual academic needs, interests, and abilities of identified students as much as possible.
8. Meets and instructs special education students at the locations and at the times designated by the school's administration.
9. Differentiates instruction for students by employing various instructional techniques and accommodations to meet the needs and capabilities of diverse learners.
10. Depending on the site’s use of para-educators, the teacher assists in lesson planning, providing materials, and developing instructional strategies for them to use with students. (Special education teachers may or may not be responsible for direct supervision of paras, again depending upon how a site has organized instruction.)
11. Assists in developing and maintaining an individualized plan for each student-staffed into the special education program.
12. Evaluate pupils’ academic and social-emotional growth and prepare progress reports for parents and the district Director of Special Education as required.
13. Assists the administration in implementing the District’s philosophy of education, policies, and rules governing instruction, student activities, and conduct. This includes behavioral/disciplinary work on behalf of the student.
14. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
15. Develop reasonable rules of student behavior and procedure; maintain fair and just order appropriate to the activity.
16. Assists in selecting and requisitioning appropriate instructional materials; maintains required inventory records.
17. Maintains accurate, complete, and appropriate records as required by law, District policy, and administrative regulation.
18. Assists in identifying pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and addressing health, attitude, and learning problems.
19. Communicates pupil progress and program information to parents and encourages their involvement in their students’ schooling.
20. Makes reasonable provision for availability to students and parents outside the instructional day for required or requested education-related purposes.
21. Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for para-educators and volunteer(s).
22. Participates in curriculum development and implementation.
23. Maintains professional competence and growth through participation in district-provided and self-selected staff development opportunities.
24. Become involved in faculty committees and student activities sponsorships.
25. Attends and participates in staff meetings as required.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
