GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The Lead School Nurse provides basic health care and first aid to secondary students at North Campus. The Lead School Nurse supervises School Nurses and Health Paraprofessionals. The Lead School Nurse works in collaboration with TCA Operations in the management and oversight of the health care programs on all campuses and in all schools. The Lead School Nurse educates the TCA community on school and community concerns.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Develops and facilitates a TCA Health Services Program
- Develops and facilitates a program budget for the purchase of necessary clinical and professional materials for all TCA campus health rooms
- Manages health care plans, health conditions, illnesses (acute and chronic), and injuries
- Coordinates student health care needs between the students, providers, family, and school
- Cares for students
- Manages, coordinates, and develops health policy to standardize school nursing practices and provide continuity of health services to students
- Ensures legal and safety compliance and networks with ASD20/TCA Legal Counsel
- Conducts orientation, training, and ensures ongoing professional development of nurses
- Coordinates annual training for TCA administration and Sodexho food service (Medication, Universal Precautions, and CPR/AED/First Aid classes)
- Serves on committees for TCA (MERT, Wellness, Concussion Team) and ASD20 (Brain Injury Team, Food Allergy Task Force) and any other health-related committees
- Supervises the TCA Medicaid Program in collaboration with ASD20 Medicaid Coordinator
- Attends state school nurse leadership meetings and Physician’s Advisory Board Meetings
- Coordinates Colorado Immunization Information System (CIIS) Registry
- Conducts in-service training for school personnel on health issues
- Maintains health information on TCA website
- Maintains Health Care Plans
- Dispenses medication according to ASD20 policy
- Contacts a TCA administrator, district lead nurse, school security officer, or designated person in case of major illness or serious injury
- Contacts the parents of ill or injured students in accordance with established health office policy and, if necessary, prepares the student to go home or transport
- Informs school personnel regarding the disposition of students sent to the health office
- Assists with hearing and vision screenings, performs rescreens, and follows up on referrals to appropriate professionals
- Maintains a complete set of accurate and timely student information records in IC
- Contacts the health paraprofessionals to ensure that all students meet immunization requirements, reviews CIIS for immunization updates, and assists with compliance on any new immunization law
- Sets-up and files a variety of documents including sensitive and confidential information, labels, and accounts for all individual medical resources maintained at TCA
- Develops and maintains current student health care plans, uploads information in IC, and advises staff on implementation of health care plans for students
- Communicates with parents and students regarding health concerns and health care, including medication and treatment at school
- Consults with teachers, counselors, and administrators regarding medical/health issues related to students, building, or district programs
- Conducts Suicides Assessments in conjunction with counselors and/or school psychologists
- Reports child abuse and neglect
- Confirms and clarifies student health needs to administration and arranges for home tutoring
- Consults on exclusion and readmission of students with infectious and contagious diseases
- Provides delegation for staff responsible for administering medication and carrying out any delegated nursing practices
- Responds to all health emergencies/concerns
- Attends student PST conferences, 504 reviews, and IEP meetings as appropriate
- Assesses students for initial referrals, triennials, and full reviews for special education
- Provides student health information to SSS for documentation of IEPs and 504s
- Provides student health information to counselors for documentation of 504s
- Contacts or provides information regarding community resources and supports as needed
- Participates in Wellness Teams at each campus
- Directs and provides medication class and health related education for staff and/or students
- Prepares and submits reports for the Director of Operations and the Colorado Department of Education
- Participates in staff development activities
- Facilitates and supports classroom health instruction to increase the existing teaching staff’s capacity to achieve the school’s health education goals
- Participates in the development and implementation of health promotion activities
- Performs other duties as required
- Carries and responds to a mobile communication device for a prearranged “on call” assignment
- May be required to carry and respond to a mobile communication device for the purpose of conducting school related business both during and after normal business hours
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
- Master’s Degree in Nursing Administration or related field, and/or Advanced Practice Nursing preferred; OR
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing with a minimum of five years previous managerial or leadership experience in school health environment and/or related nursing field required
- Valid state license to practice as a registered nurse
- Certificate or license as public school nurse, or other certificate required by the state
- CPR/FA/AED Trainer Certification or willing to obtain if needed for school support
- Knowledge of Medicaid program preferred
- Active CDE Special Services License or willing to obtain
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the TCA Board of Directors may find responsible and appropriate
EXPERIENCE:
- Experience in pediatric, urgent care, or public nursing preferred
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- Must possess an acceptable driving record
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Willing to carry out delegation of Nurse Practice Act
- General knowledge of laws, rules, regulations, and procedures related to The Classical Academy’s operations and functions
- Considerable knowledge of computer equipment and related software
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to maintain accurate filing system
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, administrators, students, parents, school district, and the public
