Area of Responsibilities
*ASSESSMENT AND CARE: *Follows standards of nursing care and policies related to assessment and patient care. Uses critical thinking to effectively assess patient and determine nursing care needs. Demonstrates ability to provide technical assistance to physicians during surgical invasive procedures based on departmental policy and or established national standards (AORN, TJC, ASPAN, SGNA, AAMI).
*LEADERSHIP: Responsible for assessing staffing requirements for the current and oncoming shifts and assures adequate staffing on all nursing Staffs commensurate with patient need and nursing staff education and abilities. Facilitate use of scheduled staff in a manner which facilitates effective patient flow and efficient use of resources. Provides Leadership in absence of managers or Director. Collaborates with Nurse Manager and Director regarding staffing and nursing personnel issues. Assures quality nursing care through rounds and ongoing unit supervision. Role models an interdisciplinary collaborative approach to patient care through interactions with other departments. Coordinates implementation of Disaster Plans. Effectively handles situations in a calm, objective manner and coordinates needed change. Adaptable, flexible, and consistently effective in staffing and managing problems. Challenges and adapts systems to maximize the benefits for patient care. Collaborates with physicians and other disciplines to implement interventions to meet emerging problems. *Supervises care given by professional and nonprofessional personnel, providing instruction as needed. *Regularly attends unit conferences and makes recommendations for improvement in patient care via the patient care conference and unit conference.
*QUALITY, PI, STANDARDS AND COMPLIANCE: Knowledgeable regarding hospital policy and procedures, regulatory standards, evidence-based practice guidelines (EMTALA, TJC, CMS, Georgia Board of Nursing, quality metrics, etc.) Knowledgeable in the review of data within the electronic record. Assists director and managers in the identification, coordination and, implementation and monitoring of unit specific process improvement opportunities which minimize errors, improve patient safety and satisfaction, maximize resource utilization and provide a safe work environment. *Demonstrates knowledge of own role in patient safety, recognizing unsafe practices. *Displays knowledge of the National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG).
- PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Committed to finding solutions to problems rather than blaming others. Demonstrates knowledge of rules, regulations, policies, procedures, standards of nursing practice. Accurately evaluates self and establishes goals in self-directed manner. Actively seeks out opportunities for knowledge skill enhancement within and beyond the practice setting.
- EDUCATION AND MENTORING: Assists in provision of education for department staff to include orientation of new employees and ongoing in-service to develop and ensure competency and compliance with standards related to best practice, specialized departmental equipment, procedures, ages specific competencies, medication management and age specific core competencies and staff compliance with annually required education.
Compliance Statement
Employee performs within the prescribed limits of Tanner Health System's Ethics and Compliance program. Is responsible to detect, observe, and report compliance variances to their immediate supervisor, the Compliance Officer, or the Hotline.
Required Knowledge & Skills
Education: Associate Degree or 2 years of college coursework
Experience: One year of related experience. Requires a working knowledge of standard practices and procedures.

Supervision
Has limited supervision over a large section of employees (15 up), i.e. assigns and directs their work. Instructs new employees and corrects results, may discuss with supervisor, but has no authority over job content or personnel. Team governance where the Members evaluate, interview, and recommend personnel actions
Qualifications
Supervisory experience and certification preferred. * CPR must be obtained within 30 days from hire.
Definitions
Manage all aspects of specialty area, including direct daily supervision of staff working on assigned team, inventory control, assignment of team members. Coordinates case planning, patient flow and implementation of processes. Responsible for Team success on identified quality measures such as patient hospital acquired conditions and fiscal responsibility for their unit.
Position Responsibilities
Contact with Others: Frequent contacts of a significant nature involving difficult negotiations and technical matters requiring thorough knowledge of organization policies or treatment, plus an ability to understand, communicate with, and to lead, and influence others to obtain willing acceptance, consent, or action. Requires a high degree of diplomacy.
Effect of Error: Probable errors may be serious and involve losses such as improper costs, overpayment, waste of material, damage to equipment, and delay in processing work. Effect usually confined within the organization. Most of work not subject to direct verification or check. Regularly works with some confidential data such as account, salaries, patient medical records, which if disclosed might have adverse internal or external effects.

Solutions to problems often require coordination with other departments.
Working Conditions: Considerable - (About 75% of the day) Involved in exposure to dirt, odors, noise, or some work is performed with exposure to temperature/weather extremes/occupational risk and probability of coming into contact with blood borne pathogens, other potentially infectious diseases, or biomedical/bio-hazardous materials.
