The Registered Nurse is a staff nurse who has two roles; Administrative and Clinical. The primary function of the RN is administrative; completes admissions, takes provider orders, completes transfers and discharges, and works collaboratively with the LPNs, CNAs, and support staff. The RN is to round on residents throughout the day and as necessary for the purpose of assuring the needs of the residents are met.
The secondary function is to provide or assist with direct nursing care to residents as needed, delegates and supervises the care provided by the LPN and CNA. The RN is in charge of the nursing team, provides leadership and structure to the day-to-day operations. It is also the expectation that the RN will be able to revert to clinical care as primary, providing direct resident care, as staffing shortages are evident in the direct care realm.
