Description of Organization:
A Better Chance (ABC) is a national nonprofit whose mission is to increase substantially the number of well-educated young people of color who are capable of assuming positions of responsibility and leadership in American society. The Madison A Better Chance chapter was established in 1970 and is a Community Schools Program (CSP) that provides up to 6 academically talented, male, minority students from educationally disadvantaged urban environments the opportunity to attend Daniel Hand High School in Madison, Connecticut.
The Part-time Resident Assistant Tutor is responsible for mentoring scholars enrolled in the Madison ABC program and shares responsibility with the Resident Director for the safety and personal conduct of scholars. The Resident Assistant Tutor oversees the scholars’ academic progress and is expected to show genuine interest in their academic and extra-curricular activities, including establishing and maintaining high expectations and standards for academic conduct and achievement. As a leader of the household, the Resident Assistant, together with the Resident Director, creates a “home-away-from-home” atmosphere with a sense of family unity for those living in the ABC house. The Resident Assistant Tutor reports directly to the Resident Director on a day-to-day basis, but receives additional guidance from Board members including, but not limited to, the President, Student Affairs Chairperson, and Personnel Chair.
