The City of Wheaton is hiring a full-time Maintenance Worker for our Public Works Water Division. This position performs maintenance, service, repair and construction to the City's water systems. Specific work assignments are provided on a daily basis and may be rotated. Work includes the operation of motorized equipment and the expenditure of heavy physical labor. The Maintenance Worker may also be assigned as a Crew Leader.
Duties and Responisbilities
Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Perform a variety of tasks in the maintenance of water mains, services, fire hydrants, valves and related equipment
- Conduct inspections on the work of contractors
- Repair both commercial and residential water meters, inspect meters for defective operation, and install new meters and automatic meter reading components as directed
- Flush fire hydrants
- Perform physical labor such as excavating, trenching and shoring, repairing water main breaks, etc
- Locate water mains and services for excavations and JULIE locates
- Restore asphalt or concrete as needed following maintenance work; restore landscape after excavation and construction work
- Operate a wide variety of equipment and vehicles of various classifications as qualified and assigned, including dump trucks, tractors, loaders, pumps, backhoe and other equipment
- Operate various hand and power tools
- Perform minor chemical tests on water samples as required
- Assist in snow removal operations as required
- Respond to 24-hour emergency call-back
Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid Illinois Driver's License
- Valid Illinois Commercial Driver's License with related endorsements (if not currently held, must be obtained during employee's probationary period)
- Possession of a current Flagger's Certification and Forklift Certification preferred
