ORGANIZER – IATSE LOCAL 480 – NEW MEXICO
Job description
IATSE Local 480, the film technician’s union of New Mexico, is looking for a qualified Organizer, experience in the motion picture and television industry preferred.
Summary:
The job duties of a Local 480 Organizer include internal political and community organizing, membership advocacy, event planning and other duties related to the goals of the Union. This position reports to the Business Representative. This position Is a salary exempt position, occasional evening and weekend work required along with some travel across the state of New Mexico.
Experience:
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in union work in motion picture & television and who also possess experience in labor, community, or political organizing experience.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required, as is proficiency with computers and database entry.
Industry related skills and safety training is a plus.
Example of Responsibilities:
· Organizing: Engaging with new, established, and potential members to achieve our worksite goals and to report to the Business Representative and Field Representative of any potential workplace issues or contract violations. Organizing non-union productions and job titles into our union.
· Community Organizing: Develop and maintain relationships with our community partnerships and ensuring compliance with any established community partnership, internship program, and pathways to union membership.
· Leadership Development: Assisting with identifying workplace leaders and shop stewards and aiding in the training and development of those leaders. Regular check-ins with worksite leaders to ensure they are helping to meet our organizational, political, and community goals.
· Helping with get out the vote efforts during political seasons, event planning during union expos, solidarity days, collective bargaining campaigns, and rallies.
· Communication: Maintain regular and effective communication with workers through set/off-production visits, phone calls, and meetings. Respond to inquiries and communications from members in a timely fashion.
· Regular one-on-one contact with members will be required.
· Administration: Maintain a calendar which accurately documents past, present, and future activities, visits, and appointments. Assist in documentation of workplace issues and potential contract violations and assist the field representative(s) and Business Representative identifying potential grievant(s). Assist in keeping an accurate record of production and production activities.
· Database Management: Maintains database on worksite issues, membership trends, along with overflow and out-of-state hires.
· Maintain a working knowledge of and conform to all standing rules, policies, and practices and the IATSE local 480 Constitution and Bylaws, contracts, and International Constitution and Bylaws.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Commitment to unionism
· Experience in labor, community, or political organizing
· Experience in on and off production in MPTV industry
· Strong written and verbal communication skills, including reporting and presentations
· Knowledge of IATSE Collective Bargaining Agreements (contracts)
· Ability to work independently and within a team, and to handle a fast-paced environment and multiple projects.
· Ability to maintain good working relations with diverse membership and staff.
Minimum Requirements:
· 3 to 5 years of political, community, or union organizing experience as a paid staff person.
· Deep understand of leadership development models and experience in assisting and developing worksite or community leaders for a labor union or non-profit
· Experience and a proven track record of winning union organizing, political or community campaigns
· Ability to work evenings and weekends
· You must possess a valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and an automobile for business use.
