Job Description
HVAC Mechanic
POSITION PURPOSE:
Under the general direction of the Facilities Director, the primary focus of this
position is to perform skilled work in trouble shooting , repair, and maintenance of
all Board of Education building HVAC systems. This includes all air conditioning,
heating, boiler, and control systems. In addition to HVAC support, this position
will also provide occasional multi-trade support to other trades people, in the
modification, upgrade, construction, and maintenance of all Board of Education
buildings. Multi-trade work may include support for building automation systems,
plumbing, electrical, and carpentry.
ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
To perform this job satisfactorily, an individual must be able to perform the
following essential duties. The requirements listed below are representative of the
knowledge, skill, and/or abilities required.
Supports Director of Facilities to ensure school facilities department runs
efficiently, equipment is maintained properly, and facilities are kept to
high standards.
Maintains work order system and ensures work orders are completed in a
timely fashion, performs necessary corrections and/or assists in
scheduling vendors for corrective work.
Installs, troubleshoots and repairs heating, air conditioning and
refrigeration units, including chillers, boilers, heat pumps, and associated
control systems.
Operates energy management system software.
Troubleshoots malfunctioning heating, air conditioning and refrigeration
systems to determine the cause of the malfunction.
Assists the Facilities Director in preparing annual budget regarding
HVAC systems.
Assists the Facilities Director in personnel scheduling.
Performs scheduled maintenance inspections, adjusts, cleans and
calibrates various systems to assure proper system operations.
Repairs wiring and electronic components associated with automated
building management systems.
Replaces expansion valves, compressors, motors, coil units and other
typical component parts.
Cleans refrigerant systems from hermetic burnouts, evacuates, and
charges systems.
Troubleshoots and repairs direct digital and pneumatic control systems.
Checks distribution systems for proper velocity, volume, temperature,
pressure, etc.
Balances air and water treatment systems.
Determines cause of and corrects condensation problems.
Assists in training other staff in preventative maintenance of HVAC
systems.
Prepares, records and reports, describing procedures, actions taken and
recommended solutions.
Ability to be available to work outside normal working hours and be
available for on-call work as needed over a 24 hour time period.
Responds to emergency service requests.
Maintains an inventory of supplies for repair, and maintenance of HVAC
systems. Prepares and submits requests for supplies and equipment.
All other duties as assigned
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
May supervise an assigned work crew.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Completion of vocational technical school program in the HVAC trade or
completion of an approved apprenticeship program in the trade with five or more
years of progressively responsible experience working with complex HVAC
systems and equipment.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and
maintenance instructions, plans, sketches, blueprints, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write accurate reports and correspondence. The capacity to speak
effectively before groups of employees of the organization is a must.
REASONING ABILITY
Aptitude to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished
in written, oral, or diagram form. This employee must have ability to deal with
problems involving several variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
This position must have one of the following Connecticut State Licensures:
D-1 Unlimited HVAC or D-2 Limited HVAC
S-1 Unlimited HVAC & Piping or S-2 Limited HVAC & Piping
Applicant must have a valid Connecticut Driver's license and a Good driving
record.
Applicant must have Universal EPA certification
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and
equipment including electronic and diagnostic tools, recovery equipment and other
HVAC equipment. The employee must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force
occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently. Specific vision abilities
required by this job include ability to adjust focus and to differentiate between
colors and shades of color. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 60% walking,
and 30% standing. The job is performed under temperature extremes and in a
generally hazard free environment.
Working Environment
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Some exposure to
potentially harmful chemicals or materials may occur.
