Position Overview
The Office of the Chief Operating Officer (OCOO) is comprised of the Strategic School Operations, Food & Nutrition Services, School Security, Facilities, and Compliance, teams. OCOO is responsible for guiding the operations and functions for all 118 schools within the District. Our goal is for all DCPS schools to be ready on the first day of school and every day thereafter so that all principals can lead, all teachers can teach, and all students can learn.
A School Police Officer provides general law enforcement duties to ensure a safe environment, conducive to learning, where students and faculty can be free from hostility and disruptions which could negatively impact the educational process. The School Police Officer will establish and maintain a close partnership with school administrators and staff, students, and parents in order to provide for a safe school environment. This position is subject to working rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays, and wears a uniform and/or protective clothing. This position is a safety-sensitive position. As a result, throughout employment this position will be subject to the Employee Mandatory Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy.
The Assistant, Security (School Police Officer) will report to the Coordinator, Security (Lieutenant).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Provides general law enforcement duties for DCPS.

Responds to emergency or crisis situations occurring or developing.

Makes arrests, detains suspects of crimes, identifies witnesses, conducts field interviews, and renders first aid to injured persons.

Conducts vehicle/foot patrols of DCPS properties throughout the city.

Monitors security contract compliance when visiting schools, and reports any issues observed to the Director, School Security; and monitors and dispatches alarms, camera systems, and emergency calls.

Operates district owned or leased vehicles.

Interacts with other district and federal law enforcement agencies.

Keeps up-to-date on changes in DCPS policies and procedures related to the team.

Prepares clear, concise, logical, accurate, and coherent written and oral reports which present relevant facts, emphasize significant details, and substantiate the recommendations/actions.
Qualifications
- Associate's degree OR one year of experience.

Previous exposure to or experience in the education sector a plus.

Two to three years armed officer experience preferred.

Bilingual candidates, ability to speak proficiently in Spanish preferred.

US citizenship, and also maintains a variety of other certifications to include: CPR, First Aid, defensive weapons, etc.

Remains calm under extreme pressure and circumstances and deals with individuals, groups, and situations in a firm and tactful manner with respect for the rights of others; and works effectively under pressure with frequent interruptions and new and rapidly changing priorities and exercises proper judgment in prioritizing and carrying out work assignments.

Obtains a School Police Officer's Commission from the District of Columbia Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) within 90 days of hire and maintains it throughout employment with DCPS.

Carries and uses a firearm and must successfully qualify three times per year with the firearm (this position is subject to the Lautenberg Amendment/Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968).

Must pass a personnel background investigation and medical examination; and must comply with Drug Abuse Testing Program requirements.

Successfully completes a 90-day training period and one year probationary period; and candidate must be able to pass D.C. Code Certification course within the first year of employment with DCPS.

Male applicants born after December 31, 1962 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.

Possesses and maintains a valid motor vehicle operator's permit and acquires and maintains a District of Columbia operator's permit to operate a DC government motor vehicle.
