Summary: The Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive patient care utilizing the Nursing Process to assess, plan, deliver, and evaluate care for cardiac patients utilizing professional nursing standards. Care is delivered with a holistic approach focusing on the patient, family, and/or significant others. Specific focus for the RN is directed toward:
§ Assess and evaluate changes in the patient’s status and their need for care
§ Addressing patient, family, and significant other’s education, teaching, and counseling needs
§ Integrates health maintenance, promotion, and preventative aspects of care
§ Provides telephone triage / consultation to patient, family, and/or significant others according to clinic protocol.

Requirements:
§ RN licensed in the State of Wisconsin
§ ACLS and BLS
§ Effective verbal and written skills
§ Ability to interpret EKG strips
Responsibilities:
§ Implements the Nursing Process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate the cardiac patient during the office visit. Assessment parameters include: review of patient history, nursing assessment as appropriate including vital signs, review of treatments and/or procedures, and review of patient medications and allergies.
§ Education of patient and/or family (significant other) regarding disease process, risk factors, procedures, medications, and pre- and post-op care. Assess the patient’s understanding of instructions and counseling.
§ Performs and interprets EKG’s and rhythm strips if required for visit.
§ Ability to interpret cardiac test results for deviation from normal and alerts appropriate team member of situation. Communicates test results to patients as appropriate.
§ Clearly communicates medical information to professional practitioners and/or the general public in verbal or written form.
§ Good knowledge and understanding of standard laboratory and diagnostic procedures routinely ordered in cardiology.
§ Effectively triages patient phone calls providing guidance and direction to inquiries as defined by clinical guidelines.
§ Effectively triages incoming provider orders, results, requests and faxes.
§ Schedule, coordinate and ensure appropriate education for procedures.
§ Perform independent clinical visit with a patient for the purpose of physical assessment or to gather information such as blood pressure, heart rate or ekg tracings. It is the responsibility of the Rn to document then communicate this information to the provider
- Serves as a resource for co-workers and other team members
- Directs actions of nursing support personnel. Provides oversight of the MA/LPN and delegates duties to the MA/LPN as appropriate.
- Ability to use computer system to obtain patient information, order labs and tests, and check messages.
- Develops the monthly schedule (templates) for physician’s clinical practice in collaboration with the physician.
- Manages the physician’s time by facilitating the patient flow and treatment process
- Schedules and scribes orders for hospital admissions, procedures, and tests in accordance with HWV protocols.
- Ability to elevate appropriate patient or staff concerns.
- Assists with coverage of other areas within HVW as appropriate based on demonstrated clinical competency, i.e. Lipid Clinic, CT, and stress echo
- Participates in the development of Policies and Procedures related to the Clinic
- Complies with all practice policies and procedures, state, and federal regulations
- Participates in data collection for statistical and quality purposes for HVW
- Other duties as assigned.
