Volunteer: Raptor enclosure cleaning, cage cleaning, and maintenance

Paws Animal Wildlife Sanctuary, Inc. (PAWS) is a volunteer based non-profit organization focusing on wildlife education, rescue and rehabilitation. We operate out of South Carolina and carry rehabilitation permits from the state and federal government. Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and release orphaned or injured wildlife, and to provide educational live-animal presentations that promote peaceful coexistence with native North American wildlife.
PAWS is looking for volunteers who can come to our facility in Laurens for a few hours each week to clean our raptor (hawk and owl) enclosures, crate cleaning, as well as assist in any projects needed to care for our raptors. You will need mud boots, gloves, and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. You must be at least 18 years of age and have your own transportation. You will train with other volunteers and must be willing to commit to once a week, or as back up for when other volunteers cannot make it.
DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform care for assigned animals including cleaning and enclosure maintenance
- Prepare diets for the birds in care
- Responsible for the daily observation of animal health and welfare
- Provide animals with enrichment
- Log work done and observations made following each session
- Ability to work independently as well as with a team
- Perform quality work within deadlines with or without direct supervision
- Exhibit good teamwork and communication skills with all team members
- Report maintenance issues and potential safety hazards to appropriate manager
- Perform minor repairs and improvements of enclosures
- Follow company policies and procedures
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Must have some experience working with animals (preferably birds)
- Ability to lift at least 50 lbs
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills; have high energy and enthusiasm for completion of tasks; possess team building skills; and have the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines
- Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions such as extreme heat and/or rain
- Must have the ability to work individually and with a team with or without direct supervision
