Overview of the Position:
The Ophthalmic Technician is responsible for expedient patient flow, establishing patient rapport, performing the initial part of the examination, preparing the patient for the doctor, and assisting with special procedures. Certification is a plus!
Essential Duties / Functions / Responsibilities of the Job:
Escorts patients to exam rooms and obtains patient complaints and history.
Performs initial ophthalmic exams such as visual acuity, ocular motility, slit-lamp examination, refraction, and intraocular pressure measurement.
Under the doctor's direction, administers and records eye drops
Obtains informed contact lens consent.
Performs Visual Field testing.
Performs Fundus Photography.
Performs OCT testing.
Orders and maintains stock of medical and surgical supplies
Keeps examination rooms stocked with supplies.
Instructs patients in contact lens wearing and care regimens.
Prepares examination rooms for use each morning.
Assists the doctor and patients in making referral appointments with other doctors.
Responds to patient questions within the scope of technical knowledge
Communicates with the patient regarding patient questions, concerns, and treatment plan, as directed by the doctor.
Under the doctor's direction, communicates orders to pharmacies.
Documents telephone and verbal communications on the patient's chart/EMR.
Maintains work operations by following policies and procedures; reporting compliance issues.
Another related duty as the job requires and/or that is requested by the Office Manager.
Educational / Experience Requirements / Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent
Certified Ophthalmic Technician a plus
Experienced refractionist a plus
One year of experience in an Ophthalmology setting
Contact lens fitting experience a plus
Scribe for the physician a plus
Able to perform tasks with attention to accuracy and speed
Able to prioritize and organize work under minimal supervision
Able to think through and solve problems while remaining calm and using good judgment
Able to communicate ideas and directions and give patients instructions in a pleasant, effective, and appropriate manner
Able to evaluate and prioritize patient problems, concerns, and questions, and communicate situations appropriately to the doctor and staff without passing judgment
Follows direction thoroughly
Works well with co-workers as part of the team
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms
Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
Occasionally required to lift to 20 pounds

Pay: $17.00 - $18.50 per hour
