Surgical Technologist
Reports to: Clinic Manager
Position Type: Full Time / Part Time / Per Diem
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
POSITION SUMMARY
The surgical technologist handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. He/she has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties and responsibilities are a summary of the expectations of the position but are not intended to be all inclusive.
- Assist clinical team with patient and procedure room preparation and post-procedure clean-up
- Assists with positioning the patient, using appropriate equipment and anatomical principles to avoid patient injury
- Prepare patients for procedures including but not limited to positioning patients on procedure room table
- Prepare instruments before procedures; remove afterward; ensure sterilization of instruments
- Pass instruments to operating physicians know all instruments used in procedures
- Count surgical instruments, needles, sponges and other supplies used with the clinical team after procedures
- Ensure all members of the clinical team maintain the integrity of the sterile field during procedures
- Review the patient’s chart, identifies patient, verifies surgery to be performed with consent forms, and brings the patient to the assigned operating room.
- Operate surgical and sterilizing equipment
- Track use of medications and supplies during procedures
- Gather, arrange and remove all instruments, utensils, gloves, linens, and equipment used for assigned interventional procedures
- Assists other members of the team with terminal cleaning of room
- Participates in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care
- Ensure assigned areas are clean and stocked
- Scheduling patients for procedures and patient discharge as directed
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned including but not limited to:

- Work in other centers as needed
- Attend team meetings, phone conferences, and training as needed
- Know, understand, and follow teammate guidelines, employment policies, and department or company procedures
- Know, understand, and comply with all Center policies and procedures
- Consistent, regular, punctual attendance as scheduled is an essential responsibility of this position
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Minimum of one-year certificate or diploma with demonstrated knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, medical terminology, microbiology,surgical instrumentation and sterilization techniques to prepare equipment strongly preferred
- Two-year associate’s degree from college accredited by Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) preferred
- Minimum of one (1) year’s experience assisting in operating room preferred
- NCCT or AST certification preferred; Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) designation preferred
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
- Basic computer skills and proficiency in MS Word and Outlook required
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical requirements can vary. The position requires the following physical activities:
- Ability to lift a minimum of 5 pounds to a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted; able to stand for extended periods of time and to perform repetitive stooping, walking, stretching, reaching, with some sitting; full range of body motions required to lift patients, wear a lead apron, and lift supplies
- Manual dexterity and ability to work rapidly required
- Ability to lift and move patient transport devices
- Ability to push/pull up to 50 pounds
