QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or equivalent required. B.A. or B.S. in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Counseling or related field preferred. Up to two years of corrections field preferred or working with at-risk juveniles. Education may substitute for experience. Working knowledge of personal computers and related software, including Word, Excel, and Access preferred. Must successfully pass drug screen and security background investigation.
Must meet qualifications set forth by the state for correctional officers including but not limited to:
- The security, custody, and disciplinary practices and procedures governing the control of inmates
- Federal, State, Contracting Authority, Facility laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in a correctional facility
- Federal, State, Contracting Authority, Facility laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures governing control of inmates
- Methods, techniques, and practices of sub-professional counseling and crisis intervention for inmates
- Principles and practices of supervision and work leadership
- Use of self-defense and defense and control equipment
- Practices and techniques of observing, detecting, and defusing adverse actions by inmate populations
- Apply and interpret security, custody, and discipline measures for a facility
- Apply and interpret Federal, State, Contracting Authority and Facility laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures governing custody/ control of inmates
- Methods and techniques of supervision
- Use of and trained in self-defense and use of weapons and related defense/control equipment
- Interpret and training in understanding the vernacular of inmates
- Basic first aid measures and use of devices for self- and staff protection from serious health disorders
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Must have good oral/written communication skills as required by duties and assignments in a facility setting. Ability to maintain a calm and even temperament under stressful conditions. Ability to develop and maintain appropriate, professional interpersonal relationships with inmates and facility staff. Ability to observe, detect and defuse adverse actions by inmates. Bi-lingual in Spanish, Russian, or Chinese is a plus.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic business mathematics.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must have or are able to obtain a Food and Beverage Service Worker’s Permit within 30 days of hire, and a Valid Driver’s License. Must be able to attend facility-provided training in First Aid and CPR certification.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Physical restraint of the juvenile inmate can be expected on an occasional basis.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
