Position Summary:
The Director of Inpatient Oncology Nursing is a Registered Nurse who is empowered to ensure the delivery of personalized, comprehensive care to patients admitted to the inpatient nursing units of the hospital. Serves as a role model for professional excellence in the administration and delivery of patient care, through the use of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of staff, patient, departmental and organizational needs for the inpatient oncology areas. Areas of focus include development and implementation of philosophy, goals and objectives while ensuring compliance with clinical and regulatory requirements. Additional responsibilities include 24-hour accountability for the delivery of excellent care through direct supervision of nursing supervisors on the inpatient oncology unit and the house supervisors.
Job Responsibilities
•Guides, motivates, and develops staff by providing timely and appropriate feedback throughout the year. Ensures annual goals are finalized and review is provided on time and with appropriate input
•Effectively communicates the mission of the organization/department to staff such that mission guides day-to-day activities
•Effectively prioritizes staff and department work such that short and long-term benefits are balanced in day-to-day decision-making and problem solving
•Ensures the selection of appropriate staff for the nursing units, including current job descriptions, competency, and performance standards.
•Ensures that prompt measures are taken to prevent and address performance and behavior problems.
•Manages performance of staff through continuing education, effective delegation and ongoing coaching and counseling
•Maintains final responsibility for hiring and termination decisions
2. Education and Staff Development
•Ensures the ongoing evaluation of staff competency and identification of learning needs for unit staff.
•Works collaboratively with education providers to ensure identified needs are met.
•Actively participates in Center for Learning management training/education as well as related continuing education programs.
•Acts as a clinical resource for staff and related disciplines in the care of the oncology patient.
3. Planning:
•Plans, organizes, and directs the implementation of a comprehensive inpatient nursing program in conjunction with the integrated team.
•Ensures the development and implementation of department work processes to improve efficiency
•Seeks opportunities for organizational improvement, consistently applies lean thinking principles to departmental operations to enhance or improve service.
•Establishes priorities of patient care based on essential patient needs and available unit resources of time, personnel, equipment, and supplies.
•Incorporates best practice standards into program development and monitors clinical outcomes of patients served.
•Ensure tools and metrics are in place for workload and skill requirement to meet care needs for each area of responsibility.
•Supports and assists with the development and actualization of unit goals, strategic plan and KPI’s.

4. Managing Care Delivery
•Participates in and promotes quality improvement.
•Ensures adherence to Oncology Nursing Society standards of practice to establish a framework for monitoring care given and products used.
•Serves as a resource to staff, patient or caregiver regarding patient advocacy and delivery of safe, competent, and quality nursing care.
•Serves as a role model to staff and works collaboratively with members of the integrated team to develop and implement work processes to improve efficiency, foster cooperation among co-workers and maintain cooperation between departments.
•Acts as a clinical resource for staff and related disciplines in the care of oncology patients. Demonstrates ability to assist the staff in patient care as needed by maintaining clinical knowledge and skills.
•Establishes, implements, and evaluates quality of care for patient population. In response, implements improvement activities using lean processes to affect appropriate outcomes to improve patient satisfaction.
•Interprets and directs the implementation of nursing unit philosophy, departmental policies and procedures, and applies recommended standards of practice to nursing care.
•Develops policies, procedures and systems that guide and support consistent provision of care and services
5. Evaluation:
•Develops metrics to monitor and evaluate departmental operations to ensure compliance with licensure, accreditation, regulatory compliance, budget and overall hospital goals.
•Documentation of pertinent statistics related to unit activities.
•Responds quickly to variances in care and patient concerns, provides follow up information to Patient Relations.
•Ensures compliance with applicable regulatory standards.
•Connects with customers (patients, caregivers, co-workers) by listening and promoting a mutual understanding to evaluate care processes and identify opportunities for improvement.
6. Leadership
•Assures that staff demonstrates the COH culture of providing care through leading by example and by defining and assuring accountability as appropriate.
•Represents inpatient nursing units through active involvement in hospital committees, work groups and process improvement initiatives and ensure staff participation.
•Demonstrates the ability to make informed, independent, and timely decisions.
•Practices and promotes positive peer and guest relations
•Demonstrates awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care and unit function and strives to maintain situations in a reduced risk manner.
•Promotes customer focus by serving as an example to staff.
•Disseminates new or changing information regarding policies, benefits, and regulations to all department personnel via verbal and/or written correspondence.
7.Fiscal Accountability:
•Manage costs while rendering quality care.
•Plans for, develops, and effectively manages departmental budget such that resources are deployed effectively and efficiently.
•Monitors compliance with budget and fiscal targets.
Position Qualifications:
Minimum Education: Graduate of an accredited program of nursing-Bachelor of Science degree in nursing is required.
Minimum Experience: Ten years nursing experience in acute care or oncology. Five years management experience in inpatient hospital nursing.
Skill/ Abilities: Working knowledge of budget, business planning and health care finance. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Able to interact with a wide variety of individuals and handle several complex situations simultaneously. Demonstrates the willingness and ability to research learn and obtain knowledge for the performance of the position. Demonstrates the ability to utilize critical thinking and apply sound clinical judgment and assessment skills for decision making. Demonstrated leadership skills
Req. Certification/Licensure: Active Registered Nurse (RN) license to practice in Georgia. Current CPR certification
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $101,000.00 - $166,464.00 per year
