The Commission is a quasi-legislative, quasi-judicial agency comprised of five Commissioners elected statewide. The Commission’s mission is to exercise its authority and influence to ensure consumers receive safe, reliable and reasonably priced telecommunications, electric and natural gas service from financially viable and technically competent companies. The Commission's regulatory activities are primarily focused on investor-owned natural gas and electric power utilities. The Commission has the authority to set rates, require long-range energy plans, provide for the safety of natural gas pipelines and protect underground utility systems from damage. Job Description
Under limited supervision, oversees the provision of analysis and/or recommendations on legal issues within the scope and authority of the agency. Handles complex issues. May act as a lead worker and/or supervise support staff.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Represents Commission Advocacy Staff in litigated matters and oral arguments before the Commission.
- Writes briefs, orders, motions and requests for discovery.
- Performs legal research, prepares legal opinions and interprets laws.
- Under limited supervision, provides legal advice to members of the agency.
- Drafts legislation and rules.
- Prepares and reviews contracts involving services, leases, licenses, purchases, sales and other matters.
- Provides legal advice regarding implications of current and/or proposed business processes and safety practices.
- Responds to open records requests.
- Reports to the Director of Utilities.
Minimum Training and Experience:
Applicants must hold a law degree from an accredited college or university. State Bar of Georgia membership is required. Consideration will not be given to any applicant who is not an active, current member of the Georgia Bar in good standing.
