The City of Seattle is seeking a motivated Senior Automotive Engineer to lead complex projects and shape the Fleet Management Division’s technology strategy.
The Fleet Management Division manages a fleet of approximately 4,000 pieces of equipment used by many City departments as they carry out their work of providing critical City services. Reporting to the Design and Procurement Manager, this position performs complex planning and vehicle design work, vehicle and equipment procurement, and research and analysis to support decisions that affect the City’s fleet program. This position provides a unique opportunity to support our goal of being environmentally responsible and cost-effective with fleet decisions.

FAS is often the public's first interaction with the City of Seattle, operating as a customer-focused front door that assists with everything from paying utilities or reporting a pothole to requesting public information or even adopting a new pet.
The 450-plus employees of FAS span across 10 divisions and work behind-the-scenes providing critical functions, like managing 120 City facilities—including police and fire stations—coordinating logistics and emergency management and making sure minority-owned businesses can equitably compete for City contracts. Responsibilities
· Coordinate, design, and develop research plans for studying equipment and fuel.
· Write specifications for complex fleet vehicles and equipment (e.g., cranes, fire apparatus).
· Approve vehicle and equipment specifications prepared by other City departments.
· Administer purchase contracts for vehicles and equipment.
· Work with City purchasing and accounting departments to procure vehicles and equipment.
· Identify and evaluate equipment purchase needs, drafting specifications for users.
· Evaluate equipment to determine the need for replacement.
· Analyze vehicle maintenance repair data to identify trends and recommend corrective actions.
· Contribute to a team managing the annual replacement of over 300 vehicles per year.
· Perform design work related to the modification or development of special equipment.
· Maintain vendor relations.
Minimum Qualifications:
Requires three years fleet equipment maintenance including two years of supervisory experience, or a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Automotive Engineering.
(or a combination of education and experience, which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
Desired Qualifications:
§ Experience providing excellent customer service and using sound professional judgment.
§ The ability to analyze and solve a variety of engineering problems.
§ Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a wide variety of people.
§ Professional Engineer License highly desired.
§ Experience using Auto Cad or Sketch Up a plus.
§ The ability to be fluid and prioritize workloads.
Work Environment
This position requires a minimum of two days per week of onsite work. Overtime work may be required based on business needs. Alternative Work Arrangements and hybrid telework schedules for work conducted in a normal office environment may be considered and will be based on operational needs and consistent with City policies. Hybrid work option will only be available once candidate is onboarded and fully trained.
Additional Information
This position is classified as an Automotive Engineer, Senior. The full salary range for this job classification is 49.32 - $57.51 per hour. The identified salary range is approximately $102,980 - $120,080 annually. This position is FLSA non-exempt (eligible for overtime) and is a Classified Civil Service, Regular, Full-Time position.
