JOB DUTIES: CIRCULATING NURSE OPERATING ROOM

Qualifications:
Demonstrates knowledge of surgical procedure performed and types and uses of various anesthetic agents by making appropriate nursing assessments and properly positioning patients in the operating room.
Performs circulating functions including monitoring, recording and communicating patient condition and managing overall nursing care of patient before, during and after procedure.

INTERNAL /EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS
A. Internal Relationships
1. Collaborates with the Administrator, nursing staff and the medical staff.
2. Serves on assigned committees.
B. External Relationships
1. Collaborates with outside professional organizations.
MAJOR DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Adheres to the Center’s policies and procedures and the Profession Standards of Nursing Practice
B. Assures Patient Safety in the OR and Never Leaves Patient Unattended
C. Verbally confirms with patient, legal guardian or surgeon the identity of the patient and the site of surgery.
D. Ensures that the patient’s name and site of surgery is consistent with the consent form, ID bracelet and document this on the procedure verification checklist. If marking is required, the Circulator is responsible for viewing the mark prior to surgery.
E. Checks for allergies, dentures, jewelry, prosthesis, hairpins, nail polish, wigs, etc.
F. Reassures patient; introduces self and the scrub personnel. Checks the patient's physical comfort.
G. Assures that history and physical and appropriate ordered lab work is on the chart before the patient is anesthetized. An interim history and physical is to be done by the anesthesia provider if there is no history and physical present.
H. Assesses patient's needs in regard to the surgical procedure.
I. Assesses patient's needs as to transportation from the pre-op area to the OR.
J. Maintains professional decorum within the OR.
K. Has A Thorough Working Knowledge Of
Local Case Procedure
A. Follows same procedure as above.
B. Assures patient needs are met in the OR.
C. Reviews patient vital signs recorded operatively.
D. Monitors vital signs during the procedure, and documents on the OR.
E. Transports patient to the PACU post procedure.
General, Spinal or MAC Procedure
A. Assists in positioning patient
B. Assures patient privacy, closes OR doors.
C. Assists anesthesia provider as needed.
Duties During Case
A. Performs a “TIME OUT” for final verbal verification of the patient identity, correct site and procedure prior to the start of the case.
B. Pours solutions for scrub personnel.
C. Opens surgical supplies.
D. Keeps room organized during case, assuring appropriate containment of sponges.
E. Obtains and removes equipment as needed.
F. Assures correct surgical counts.
G. Notes any breaks in technique.
H. Anticipates the needs of the scrub nurse and keeps him/her supplied with needed materials.
I. Maintains a clean environment outside of the sterile field.
J. Protects the privacy, confidentiality, and security of personal health information.
K. Maintains accurate records in the operating room using EMR
L. Prepares patient for transfer.
M. Removes all grounding pads, dispersive electrodes.
N. Positions stretcher or patient recliner, for safety and comfort of the patient, locks wheels.
O. Transfers patient safely with use of mechanical aids as indicated.
P. Assure patient has clean gown and warm blanket upon transfer.
Q. Provides report to PACU nurse upon arrival to the PACU.
R. Returns to OR to assist with turn over.
XII. EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE
A. Minimum Qualifications
1. Current and valid licensure as a Registered Nurse
2. Must have operating room experience or equivalent outpatient surgery center experience.
3. Bachelor's Degree in Nursing- Preferred
4. BLS or ACLS Certification
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must exhibit desirable trunk and extremity mobility and strength to handle objects and people safely in the activities of holding, carrying, pushing, transferring, and pulling. Must be able to lift a minimum of 35 pounds safely. Occasional lifting may be heavy and awkward, over 50 pounds.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
In the working environment of the Center, there may be potential exposure to communicable diseases, contaminated blood and body fluids, and hazardous materials.
