AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY #1 : Reqistered Outpatient Pharmacy Technician:
Validates patient identity and screens prescriptions for completeness,
formulary/restriction and payment status, prior to processing.
Retrieves written or electronically transmitted prescriptions, types prescription.
Accurately keys and retrieves prescription data from computer generated file for review by
pharmacist.
Retrieves electronic patient records and locates prescriptions.
Prepare prescriptions for verification by a Pharmacist.
o Counting dosage units of drugs
o Placing dosage units of drugs in appropriate containers.
o Affixing the prescription label to the containers.
Handles or delivers completed prescriptions to patient or person authorized to act on behalf
of the patient and, in accordance with regulations, and advices of availability of counselling to
be conducted by licensed pharmacist or intern.
Obtain data for determining prescription cost.
Restocks automated dispensing cabinets after verification by a pharmacist - must complete
restocking log per policy,
Prepares manual records of dispensing for the signature or initials of the pharmacist.
Calculates insurance coverage of pharmacy transaction.
Assists the Pharmacist, as directed, in compounding ("compounding" means the combining,
admixing, mixing, diluting, pooling, reconstituting, or otherwise altering of a drug or bulk drug
substance to create a drug), preparing, labeling or dispensing of compounding drugs used to
fill valid prescription or medication order for a patient.
Performs pharmacy-related clerical duties.
Attends and/or participates in staff departmental and interdisciplinary meetings, training and
quality assurance/performance improvement (QA/PI) activities, as required.
Performs other functions, as directed by the pharmacist.
AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY #2: Duties of Registered Inpatient Pharmacy Technician:
Triages calls
Delivers medications to all units and exchanges cassettes.
Fills patients specific labels which must be checked by a Pharmacist. Prepares medications
for restocking of Pyxis Machines after which must be checked by Pharmacist.
Checks for expired medications in Pyxis as well as all areas of the Pharmacy and performs
unit inspections.
Fills Anesthesia trays using RFID Tray System and delivers/exchanges them after
verification by a pharmacist.
Prepares Par Stock for non-Pyxis areas and clinics.
Maintains stock inventories for main pharmacy and satellites.
Reconciles narcotic discrepancies in OR (Anesthesia) in in-services new residents on how to
use Pyxis System.
Narcotic Technician delivers Narcotics, and performs some non-professional clerical duties.
IV-Room Technician retrieves pre-mixed medication bags and affixes labels on them for
pharmacist to verify.
o Keeps medication inventories of stock medications, diluents, and supplies including
ordering from the medical stores (central Supply)
o Brings medication vials and diluents for pharmacists to mix and prepare.
o Delivers TPN and other preparations to the nursing units.
o Prepares Vial-To-Bag IV Preparations to be verified by a pharmacist.
o Maintains Vial-To-Bag production log.
o Maintains IV-Room preparation logs and statistics.
