Metallurgical Laboratory Manager - United Technical is looking for a team player who is interested in being part of every aspect of our laboratory testing and welding projects (from training and testing to engineering and development.)
United Technical is an A2LA and Nadcap accredited materials testing laboratory and American Welding Society accredited testing facility offering comprehensive services including nondestructive testing, technical training, welding and metallurgical consultation, welder qualification and laboratory testing services. Our staff consists of AWS certified welding inspectors and welding engineers who work with all materials and welding processes as well as experienced metallurgists and ASNT level II & III NDT inspectors.
We are growing and searching for an experienced Metallurgical Laboratory Operations Manager to manage and lead our destructive testing laboratory operations. These duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Support optimization of our written procedures, systems, quality documents and operations to effectively improve overall efficiency of the laboratory business unit.
- Manage technical personnel within the metallurgical laboratory; supervise, coach, manage and grow our technical professional and staff.
- Identify and implement departmental improvements to increase laboratory process efficiencies and throughput while maintaining our high quality standards.
- Responsible for leading failure investigation projects.
- Operate equipment for sectioning, mounting, embedding and polishing for preparing metallographic samples.
- Conduct mechanical properties testing (tensile, fatigue, impact), hardness testing (Brinell, Rockwell and microhardness) and metallographic structure interpretations.
- Prepare etching solutions, ensuring a ready supply of etching solutions and solvents.
- Perform material/manufacturing processing problem analysis and failure analysis.
- Operate optical microscopy equipment for analysis of materials.
- Multitask while performing prep work and analysis efficiently.
- Work with engineers and other managers on projects.
- Be proficient using spreadsheets, charts and effectively document results in written reports (Microsoft Office and Outlook).
- Maintain the laboratory environment in a safe, clean and orderly manner.
- Work with customers on an as-needed basis within the scope of job requirements.
- CNC programming experience desirable.
- Experience working with ASTM testing specifications highly desirable.
