Note: Posting at Two Levels Depending upon the qualifications of the successful applicant, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position as Environmental Science Technician I or II.
Summary
With general supervision, collects, prepares, and / or analyzes scientific / environmental samples or data to support environmental / engineering programs, studies, and analyses. Receives and / or collects routine or special scientific / environmental samples to be analyzed. Prepares and analyzes samples using diverse, highly specialized instruments, equipment, and work methods. Utilizes various technologies to compile, manipulate, analyze, maintain data, and generate reports. Operates, calibrates, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs various pieces of equipment. The positions can vary significantly by area (either within the analytical laboratory, or in other departments within Environmental Sciences).
The work must be performed in accordance to set procedures, standards, and regulatory requirements and is subject to audits by company or regulatory (State / Federal) auditors. Candidates will learn and perform basic and routine laboratory and field tasks in accordance with established procedures under the observation of more senior employees. Candidates will begin to solve routine problems, handle communications, and understand and independently implement work unit procedures.
For incumbents, this level requires, as a prerequisite, complete satisfactory performance of Environmental Science Technician I tasks. In addition, incumbents must demonstrate a thorough understanding of the technical aspects of the job. Incumbents function under general supervision, i.e., incumbents receive assignments and are expected to carry them through to completion with substantial independence. Incumbents may be assigned responsibility for small or routine projects.
Responsibilities
- Works with scientists and more senior employees to implement and perform technical / scientific, environmental, health and safety activities that require broad scientific knowledge and capabilities. Supports basic work activities in order to comply with environmental regulations, health and safety requirements, and regulatory requirements. Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of basic programs, systems, and procedures.
- Support section and departmental administrative and development functions including special projects and assignments, employee training, emergency preparedness, and quality assurance programs.
Required/Basic Qualifications - Tech I
Associate degree in chemistry, Biology, Environmental Sciences or another technical related field. In lieu of associate's degree(s) AND 2 plus year(s) related work experience listed above, High School/GED AND 4 plus

Associate degree in chemistry, Biology, Environmental Sciences or other technical related field

Desired Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Applied Chemistry
In addition to desired degree, 3 plus years related work experience
Additional Preferred Qualifications
3 years of environmental laboratory experience
Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems, specifically Sample Master.
Experience with the sample receipt of environmental samples.
Experience with the preparation of field kits for sampling projects.
Experience with sample preservation and sample integrity issues with environmental testing
Additional Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience working in either a laboratory or other technical setting.
Concept or knowledge of environmental and/or health and safety regulatory compliance requirements, analytical chemistry methodologies, scientific practices, quality assurance principles, and auditing principles
General technical skills and environmental knowledge in relevant subject areas (air/water/waste/natural resources)
Good communication skills (both oral and written) and interpersonal skills with a customer-oriented focus.
