Why is a Direct Support Professional important?
A Direct Support Professional is someone who works to improve, enrich, and respect the lives of individuals with developmental, physical, and mental disabilities. This individual plays an important role in maintaining an individual's daily health and wellness.
Job Summary:
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) first and foremost ensures that all supervision requirements are met for their clients, in accordance with each person's support plan. They assist clients with their daily routines, implement individual program plans, document client progress, and respond to meet service needs while ensuring the safety and well-being of the clients. The successful candidate will be able to develop and maintain professionally appropriate therapeutic relationships with each client and the client’s family and maintain positive working relations with staff and other related persons to ensure services are delivered in a smooth and effective manner. Must be willing to cook, do moderate housekeeping, drive clients to various locations, document activities, follow support plans, and implement therapeutic interventions as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A positive attitude and willingness to learn
- Compassion and a desire to help others
- 18 years of age or older
- Ability to pass a background check
- Valid US driver’s license (for 1 year or more)
- Basic computer skills
- Ability to read, write, and speak the English language

Duties vary from program to program, but may include:
- Providing support with hobbies, studies, and social activities
- Use the company van to take individuals to community activities or appointments
- Providing companionship and supportive listening
- Cooking, assistance with feeding
- Charting or taking notes for others to review
- Administering medication
- Reporting changes in the health or status of the client
- Taking vitals
- Assisting with personal cares
- Maintaining an individual's health equipment
