Job Description: Perform wood pole inspections through visual observation, sound testing of the pole using a hammer and probing of the pole at various depths up to six inches below the groundline in all four quadrants of the pole to locate pockets of wood decay. Perform inspection of pad-mount transformers, and underground equipment through visually inspecting the exterior of the cabinet for excessive rust, presence of warning labels and the surrounding area for erosion or limited access. Inspection of inside of the cabinet for animal or insect nests, excessive heating of bushings and other potential hazards. All inspection data will be recorded electronically via handheld device equipped with inspection application.
Duties and Core Responsibilities:
- Inspection of Utility Pole using 20oz sounding hammer and portable heavy-duty drill
- Perform testing of penetration and decay with extended shank drill bit and core sample drill bit
- Enter data into handheld device with photo records with high degree of accuracy
- Drive from location to location using GPS navigation
- Must be able to read penetration gauges and steel rule gauge
- Able to use critical thinking when assessing pole conditions
- Must be able to work with utility personnel and utility customers
- Able to work independently while providing routine progress reporting
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned or required
Required Skills:
- Must have a firm understanding of mechanical and electrical principles
- Must have computer skills including the ability to operate a PC, mobile hand held applications, email, and navigation systems
- Must conduct in a professional manner and have strong communication skills to interact with the public, utility and internal teams
- Individual must be willing and able to travel and stay overnight one to two weeks of their work schedule
- The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
- Will be required to sit, reach with hands/arms, stand, walk, ability to handle/use tools, stoop, kneel, crawl and crouch
Additional Requirements:
- Must have current (non-expired) Drivers License
- Need to have high school diploma or GED equivalent
- Must be able to travel; willingness to Travel is 100%
