Kennel Assistant/Technician
Reporting Structure: The Kennel Assistant works under the direct supervision of the Kennel Supervisor and Owner who will indicate general assignments, limitations and priorities. Practitioners/animal health technicians provide specific instructions in giving medications, feeding specific diets or following special sanitary procedures. Recurring assignments are performed independently. Deviations or unfamiliar situations are referred to the supervisor.
Kennel Assistant Objectives: The Kennel Assistant provides care and the basic needs of animals that are being boarded, groomed, in daycare or that are Veterinary patients of Liberty Pet Resort & Wellness Center including cleaning of cages, runs and ward areas, laundry, walking, proper feeding, medicating and general care of all pets in our facility. Limited restraint of pets may be required and interaction/supervision/engagement in play with dogs in daycare.
Position type and expected hours of work:
- Full or Part-Time
- 8-10 hour Shifts Monday – Friday
- 6-8 hour shifts Saturdays
- 2-4 hour shifts Sundays
- Weekend & Holiday shifts required
Education and Experience:
-Previous veterinary and/or kennel environment with animal/pet experience preferred
JOB FUNCTIONS:
Technical
- Supervise groups of dogs engaged in group play activities (day care).
- Observe animal appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease and discontent.
- Handle animals as required and restrain animals.
- Walk boarded dogs several times a day.
- Clean, disinfect and maintain kennels, cages, runs and outdoor yards and facilities.
- Administer medication to pets as instructed.
- Record daily observations of pet's behavior, energy, attitude and health.

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Possess exceptional interpersonal communication skills.
- Reading comprehension and ability to write/record information on a record.

- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept direction on given assignments.

More than 2/3 amount of time will be spent standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing or balancing, and using hands and fingers to handle and feel.
More than 2/3 amount of time will be spent on lifting 10-50 lbs. and up to 100 lbs. and above with assistance.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust to focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to hazards associated with aggressive patients; hazards associated with infected animals and controlled substances; exposure to unpleasant odors and noises; exposure to bites, scratches and animal wastes; possible exposure to contagious diseases.
Work is normally performed inside; some outside work is required.
