Position Purpose
The Engineering Technician assists engineers with research and development, quality, or design. They may also work alongside production with assembly or quality during inspections. Responsible for developing and testing solutions to solve technical problems in design and manufacturing. Assists engineers, inspects products, conducts tests and collects data. The Engineering Technician evaluates drawing designs of new or improved tools by measuring the drawing dimensions against the original specifications before preparing the layout. They clearly explain and demonstrate changes in how to assemble or use a part.
Responsibilities
- Assist engineers with improving manufacturing methods and maintaining assembly systems.
- Design, test and manufacture products or machinery.
- Run and maintain devices or equipment used to test products or sub-assemblies.
- More field service – start up issues fix.
- ECO management.
- Assemble and test parts during design phase on prototypes or first builds before mass purchasing of parts for production.
- Manufacture Tooling, Jigs and Fixtures for streamlining of production process.
- Create solutions to complex technical manufacturing and design problems.
- Assist engineers and operations in the creation, modification and testing of products or processes.
- Perform extensive research and development during design phases of product lifecycles.
- Inspect products and processes for flaws and identify areas of improvement.
- Attend design meetings and offer ideas for design manufacturability.
- Conduct tests and collect data on product and process improvement.
- Assist in product design, development and production.
- Prepare and run experiments for root cause investigation and improvements.
- Create prototype equipment for design.
- Utilize computer-aided design and drafting equipment during design phase.
- Calibrate and maintain test equipment.
- Program and run computer simulations to test designs virtually before manufacture of prototype parts.
- Estimate project costs and specify components to be used.
- Design, develop, test and manufacture electronic and computer-controlled mechanical systems.
- Develop methods used in the prevention, control or remediation of safety/ergonomic hazards during manufacturing.
- Lead projects to improve product line labor productivity, direct cost and delivered quality ensuring effective implementation.
- Support the engineering staff as required including clerical responsibilities such as document control and drafting requirements.
- Support Engineering team on special projects as required.
- Uses computer assisted crafting (CAD) equipment and software.
- Analyze design or manufacturing data with Excel or various other analysis tools.
- May include domestic and international travel for installation and support (requiring current passport).
- Using statistical methodology, identify process drivers to key business metrics such as product cost, delivered quality, process safety and product delivery.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to use CAD systems such as SolidWorks, Cadkey, AutoCAD and Inventor to create drawings.
- Familiarity with Design Standards.
- GD&T experience and/or training.
- Software and use of databases.
- Mechanical aptitude.
- Experience with lasers, cameras, fine precision robotics, assembling prototype equipment together.
- Design for manufacturing and validation background.
Education and Experience
- Two year degree in electrical, software, mechanical engineering or equivalent experience.
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in design for a manufacturing environment.

We are an ITAR protected facility and due to the nature of your role, you may encounter ITAR related project information. Your citizenship status will determine what access you have at the facility.
External to DWFritz
- Possible contact with customer’s Technicians, Engineers, and Project Managers.
Internal to DWFritz
- Technicians, Engineers, Project Managers, Project Assistants and other DWFritz Automation employees and contract workers.
Work Environment
- Onsite requirement.
- Working conditions include the possibility of working long hours during project deadlines and moderate workload pressure.
- Operating power tools and working on automated equipment in various stages of production.
- This job operates in an industrial automation environment and is subject to hazards common to automated industrial machinery.
- May include domestic/international travel for installation and support (requiring current passport).

The employee must be able to wear personal protective equipment and gear for much of the workday. The employee may occasionally lift up to 50 pounds; bend, stoop, kneel, and grasp. The employee may be working at a personal computer workstation for significant periods.
