Job Description:
The contractor shall provide professional nursing services in direct patient care, specifically focusing on elective surgery and critically ill emergency patients. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
A. Patient Assessment and Monitoring
- Observe and assess the health status of elective surgery and critically ill emergency patients through physical assessments, examinations, patient and family interviews, and reviewing past medical histories.
B. Treatment Initiation and Emergency Response
- Initiate treatments, medications, and emergency and resuscitative measures in accordance with physician’s pre, intra, and post-operative orders, standing orders, and ACLS/PALS protocols.
C. Documentation
- Record observations, nursing interventions, therapeutic measures, hemodynamic monitoring data, and other relevant data for patients in the OR and PACU.
D. Therapeutic Administration
- Administer prescribed therapeutic measures such as medications, intravenous fluids, blood transfusions, and oxygen therapy, as directed by anesthetists, anesthesiologists, and surgeons.
E. Equipment Operation
- Operate and monitor specialized equipment including cardiac monitors (ECG), EKG machines, glucometers, gastric and thoracic suction devices, CO2 tanks for laparoscopic surgery, laparoscopic video equipment, electrocautery (ESU), powered equipment, dermatomes, and sterilization equipment such as autoclaves and level one Steris.
F. Surgical Team Collaboration
- Collaborate with surgical and multidisciplinary teams to assess, plan, and implement surgical interventions for patient care pre-operatively.
G. Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) Functions
- Provide intravenous and respiratory therapy in the PACU, assess cardiopulmonary, respiratory, hemodynamic statuses, and pain levels, and initiate treatments and physician/anesthesia orders as indicated.
H. Operating Room Circulating Nurse
- Assist anesthesia with intubation and extubation, positioning, and preparation for surgical procedures by gathering necessary equipment and supplies. Utilize sterile techniques to prep surgical sites, conduct surgical counts where necessary, assist in the use of OR-specific equipment, and document care on intraoperative forms.
I. On-Call Responsibilities
- Take call for the operating room/recovery room, providing all phases of perioperative care for after-hours urgent/emergent surgical patients.
J. Inter-Facility Transports
- Provide professional nursing care during patient transport between facilities.
K. Documentation and Record Keeping
- Provide appropriate documentation of care rendered using CCHCF’s Electronic Health Record (EHR) system. Utilize the EHR system to obtain pertinent patient information and ensure proper training and competency in its use.
L. Compliance
- Follow facility policies and procedures, as well as standards set by TJC, OSHA, Indian Health Services (IHS), and other federal licensing, accreditation, and regulatory bodies.
Work Schedule:
- Shifts: 8.0-hour shifts, totaling 10 shifts per 2-week period.
- On-Call: Rotating on-call during weeknights and weekends as scheduled by the SCN based on unit needs.
- Lunch Break: Thirty minutes for day shifts.
