POSITION TITLE: Special Education Teacher & Part Time Special Education Coordinator
REPORTS TO: PRINCIPAL
NYFACS OVERVIEW:
The New York French American Charter School (NYFACS) is a PreK - 8 school located in the heart of Harlem and the Francophone community. Comprised of parents, teachers and families from over 80 different countries and nationalities around the world, the school provides lessons in cultural diversity alongside a strong bi-lingual education in an immersive environment.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Teachers are responsible for collaborating with their grade level teams and mentoring any teaching assistants. All NYFACS teachers are responsible for intellectual preparation for each lesson, building strong and positive relationships with students and families, using data to tailor their instruction, and actively engaging in collaboration with their colleagues. The Special Education Coordinator serves as the primary liaison between NYFACS and the Committee on Special Education, oversees compliance as related to special education and coordinates services within the school for students with disabilities.
Job Responsibilities: Special Education Teacher • Develop and teach clear and engaging lessons that follow the rigorous, Common Core aligned NYFACS curriculum • Utilize formal and informal assessment data to drive instruction and ensure student mastery of standards • Build a warm and inclusive classroom environment, implementing the practices of Responsive Classroom • Create and maintain strong relationships with students and families • Actively participate in grade-level meetings, collaborative planning, and professional development meetings and/or conferences • Accept ultimate responsibility for the academic progress of his or her students, and work to actively overcome setbacks
Job Responsibilities: Special Education Coordinator
1. Special Education Compliance
· Analyze student performance data to track progress towards IEP goals.
· Coordinate classroom observations and testing (i.e. psychological) as needed.
· Coordinate the provision of related services with CSE and parents in timely manner.
· Direct staff for CSE meetings (including triennials, annual reviews & initial meetings).
· Ensure appropriate testing modifications are implemented for students with disabilities.
· Ensure necessary documents (School behavior logs, attendance records, etc.) are obtained in advance of IEP meetings.
· Facilitate timely evaluations and meetings with CSE (including triennials, annual reviews & initial meetings)
· Identify incoming students’ special education needs and ensure compatibility with the services NYFACS can provide.
· Keep IEPs up to date, coordinate initial write-up and revisions, and ensure quality control.
· Maintain current special education rosters and disseminate them to instructional staff.
· Manage time frame for re-evaluations and initial referrals with parents including follow-up regarding process.
· Monitor learning strategists in the creation of SWD portfolios containing frequent anecdotal observations and sample work.
· Serve as the primary liaison between NYFACS and CSE.
· Update information on student IEPs in SESIS in a timely manner.
2. Teacher/Student Supports
· Collaborate with school directors to create support services schedules.
· Counsel families (includes visiting schools with parents or going to the CSE).
· Facilitate Child Study Team (CST) meetings.
· Provide occasional professional development workshops to whole staff on issues/strategies/topics related to special education.
· Train academic intervention team members in observation and evaluation for students in the CST process
· Work with related services personnel who are not based at NYFACS to create open lines of communication with teachers.
· Prepare written reports accurately and submit in a timely manner.
· Remain current on rules set forth in special education law and regulations.
· Uphold NYFACS’s behavioral expectations for all students.
· Perform all duties as assigned by the Principal and/or his/her designee.Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) for students with special needs
- Provide instruction in literacy education, childcare, and deaf education
- Adapt curriculum materials and teaching strategies to meet the unique needs of each student
- Use behavior management techniques to create a positive and inclusive classroom environment
- Collaborate with other teachers, parents, and support staff to ensure the success of each student
- Monitor and assess student progress, adjusting instructional strategies as needed
- Provide mentoring and support to students with special needs
- Utilize assistive technology and specialized resources to enhance student learning
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a related field
- Valid teaching certification in Special Education
- Experience working with children or individuals with developmental disabilities or autism
- Knowledge of curriculum development and instructional strategies for students with special needs
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Patience, empathy, and a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of students with special needs

Pay: $65,000.00 - $105,000.00 per year
