Position Description
Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties:
- Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs, and organize response of crews.
- Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
- Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
- Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
- Inspects work performed by maintenance contractors.
- Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
- Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians
- Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
- Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members’ career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
Experience: 5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with N endorsement at the time of application

Additional conditions of employment:
- Required to work weekends and holidays
- Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.
- Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
- Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
- Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours.
- Employee may be contacted during off-duty hours to see if he/she can report to work within 1 hour for emergency situations, such as inclement weather events and other emergency
