SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assists in developing and implementing the nursing service philosophy.
2. Assists in developing policies and procedures to meet the changing needs of the nursing services.
3. Collaborates with A.D.N. in the selection process for hiring new employees.
4. Ensure that time schedules are completed appropriately and on time.
5. Completes all required forms procedures and written communication related to time schedules in accordance with the Department of Nursing Policy.
6. Secures approval from A.D.N. for overtime.
7. Notifies A.D.N. of all changes in time schedule.
8. Assists in cost control, identifies and suggests ways to reduce cost in the utilization of staff and utilization of supplies and equipment.
Organizing
1. Enhances the organizational structure of the nursing service by following and interpreting to staff their duties and the established lines of authority, responsibility and communication within the service.
2. Assists in revising job descriptions of medical nursing personnel.
3. Orients medical nursing personnel to their role responsibilities.
4. Schedules and assigns nursing personnel keeping in mind the standards, policies and procedures of the nursing service.
5. Functions as administrative role model and conforms to all hospital policies and procedures.
Directing
1. Functions expeditiously under stressful situations, remains calm and exerts control.
2. Demonstrates knowledge of equipment and steps of procedure in emergency situations.
3. Makes clinical and manger decisions that are based on nursing service policies logically applied.
4. Guides the activities of the Head Nurses.
5. Provides direct care to patients when needed acting as role model for staff.
6. Renews and monitors employee attendance and lateness, records and documents them if indicated.
7. Ensure that nursing rounds conferences and staff meetings are held regularly in the units accordingly to policy.
8. Counsels unit personnel with input from Head Nurse and A.D.N. when indicated.
Coordinating
1. Serves as a liaison between the A.D.N. and the unit personnel.
2. Collaborates with the clinician and staff education department to provide individualized staff orientation and staff development.
3. Participates in health team rounds to share information and develop a therapeutic plan of action for patients in the medical units.
4. Ensures that occurrences are identified, processed and reported promptly following Risk Management protocol.
5. Serves on committees or project teams as assigned.
Evaluating
1. Evaluates the performance of Head Nurses.
2. Assists the Head Nurse in the evaluation of unit personnel and provide feedback on area for improvement and positive reinforcement of desired behavior.
3. Makes patient rounds to evaluate nursing care, rendered by unit personnel and perform surveillance on staff conformity to established policies and procedures.
4. Ensures that Fire Safety and Infection Control policies are adhered to.
5. Audits care and performs Quality Management activities.
6. Participates in self-evaluation. Recognizes limitations and seeks assistance as necessary.
