General Job Summary: To support the children, Lead Teacher and classroom as a whole to ensure that the educational needs in the classroom and throughout the school are being met.
Essential Job Functions:
· Participate with the Lead Teacher in planning activities to meet the needs and learning objectives for children in the classroom.
· Conduct small group teaching/activity sessions as planned in cooperation with the Lead Teacher.
· Create and utilize approved methods of behavior management in cooperation with the Lead Teacher and the school’s policies.
· Record daily data on IEP objectives for each child who qualifies, and review with the Lead Teacher at least weekly.
· Attend supervisory meetings with the Lead Teacher and Program Coordinator and or Inclusion Specialist.
· Attend/Actively participate in staff meetings and parent/teacher meetings.
· Request purchase of supplies and materials to the Lead Teacher and/or Program Coordinator.
· Participate in all activities to maintain the school’s policies, standards and licensing requirements.
· Participate in cooperative planning and implementation of activities including other classrooms, including special school programs and events, playground activities, field trips, physical fitness programs and enrichment activities.
· Participate in planning and implementing activities to facilitate an inclusive environment for all children, enhance peer-teaching, and meeting needs of children in other classrooms through sharing instructional and social activities.
· Perform classroom-related duties as listed on the school schedule.
· Assist in meeting the needs of all children and in supporting the needs of all staff members when circumstances require additional attention.
· Participate in the development of the school’s positive environment and services by sharing ideas, suggestions, and cooperating in problem solving with creative suggestions.
· Comply with the policies and procedures as set forth in the Employee Handbook.
· Perform other duties as needed.
Qualifications:
- Ability to work with young children with and without special needs in a patient and respectful manner
- Knowledge of the needs of children and families and ability to meet these needs with consistency, understanding and warmth.
- Willingness to participate in a multidisciplinary approach to education.
- Commitment to learning and using augmentative communication systems as needed for enrolled children. Daily use of sign language is required.
- Ability to communicate in a positive and productive manner with other staff members as well as volunteers and interns.
Requirements:
- Completion of employee application
- Submission of three recommendations: two professional and one personal
- Completion of health examination and TB test at own expense within one year prior to employment.
- Cleared criminal background check and fingerprinting at own expense, as required by the NC Division of Child Development at own expense
- Certification in First Aid and CPR, or willingness to participate in training for both.
Education and/or Experience:
- High school education or the equivalent.
- Responsible adult capable of understanding the needs of young children and
their families.
- Minimum age 18.
- Experience working with preschool and elementary age children
- For NCPreK, have or be working on an Associate’s Degree in Child Development or have or be working on the CDA.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift objects weighing no more than 40 pounds
- Ability to bend, stoop and reach frequently
- Ability to physically perform job functions
Work Environment/Environmental Condition:
- Small classroom or 1:1 setting
- Working in conditions that are sometimes emotionally demanding and physically draining.
