As a Child Welfare Trainer (Social Services Specialist III), you will be part of a team preparing new practitioners to engage in optimal practice in their child welfare roles. The Children, Youth and Families (CYF) Division within the Department of Family Services (DFS) is seeking a part-time Child Welfare Trainer to work up to 900 hours per calendar year to provide training, facilitation and coaching to new child welfare practitioners as part of our Child Welfare Institute (CWI) Onboarding Academy. The seven-week Onboarding Academy will operate in-person three to four times per year.
This position is based in the Fairfax office. Occasional travel is required to our regional offices in Reston, Annandale, and South County.
You will make an impact by:
- Delivering training based on curricula developed for the CWI Onboarding Academy
- Facilitating Learning Circles to deepen learning related to clinical practice
- Coaching new practitioners during simulation practice to support skill development
- Liaising with unit supervisors to collaborate on supporting the development of new practitioners
- Collaborating with other CWI support and training staff to provide an integrated experience for all involved
- Infusing the Safe & Connected™ practice model throughout CYF

Employment Standards
Minimum Employment Standards:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree, plus three years of professional social work experience. A master's degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to the position must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check, a driving record check, and a Child Protective Services check.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree in social work (MSW) or a related human services degree
- Experience in performing child protective investigations, foster care and/or family preservation services
- Experience delivering training
- Experience providing guidance and feedback to child welfare practitioners
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work requires performing tasks with risks of secondary traumatic stress (STS). Ability to navigate through and make decisions in stressful situations. Sufficiently mobile to travel to regional offices. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to use automated technology. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
