Our in-house legal team is directly responsible for all non-covered litigation which includes unlawful detainers, employment suits, habitability claims, and real estate matters in addition to advising on and responding to general legal issues and inquiries that arise through the company's operation. In-House Counsel will be primarily responsible for overseeing the unlawful detainer docket but have exposure and opportunity to work on other matters and legal issues that arise within the legal department.
General Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee and manage unlawful detainer actions that will include preparing discovery, engaging in motion practice, and preparing for trials
- Conduct research and respond to various legal questions from company staff that arise concerning property management
- Appear for motion/ex parte hearings and trials
- Assist with pre-litigation dispute resolution
- Assist with reviewing and updating lease related documents, property management forms, and other company documents
- Assist with management of the legal department, e.g. maintain an organized case docket, oversee administrative staff, coordinate with company staff on various projects and other legal issues that may arise
- Work with General Counsel on various tasks related to the non-UD civil case docket including employment suits, habitability claims, real estate matters and any other issues that arise within the legal department
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1-3 years of legal experience with litigation background, preferably with experience in unlawful detainers
- Comfortable with all manner of discovery including written discovery, depositions, and handling third-party subpoenas
- Experience preparing for trial and preferably at least some unlawful detainer trial experience
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to maintain an orderly and organized case load
- Willingness and ability to adapt and learn on the job
- Collegial and professional disposition
- Member in good standing of the California bar
