Position Summary
The Sterile Processing Technician will perform decontamination, sterilization, and processing of supplies and equipment used during orthopedic surgical procedures which requires the use of state-of-the-art sterile processing methods and strict adherence to established organizational policies and procedures. Also, the Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for maintaining inventory levels of equipment and instruments used during surgeries and other medical procedures and will be prepared to assist and support the operating schedule flow and cadence by prioritizing cases based on instrument need and turnover. Successful candidate must also have experience working with outside vendors for tray drop off and pick up.
Primary Functions & Accountabilities
Adheres to sterilization process policies and procedures.
- Responsible for the decontamination and sterilization of all medical equipment, surgical instrumentation & operating room case carts.
- Cleans each item according to manufacturers' instructions.
- Correctly assembles, adjusts, and examines all equipment used during surgeries or other medical procedures.
- Verifies that each item is in good working condition; lubricates items when needed and inspects instruments under a microscope for damage and defects.
- Transports sterilized equipment to operating or examining room.
- Sorts and arranges items into correct trays and wraps trays and individual items according to Facility policy. Prepares trays with items according to scheduled procedure in a timely manner and is able to strategize daily tray and sterilization needs.
- Accurately labels each item with name and expiration date.
Correctly operates sterilizers, ultrasonic washers, and other equipment for processing items.
- Positions items correctly in sterilizer and selects proper cycle; seeks assistance when needed.
- Checks indicators for proper functioning.
- Performs required biological monitoring tests on all sterilizers according to Facility policy.
- Maintains availability of supplies for recording continuity during the sterilization process.
- Cleans sterilizers according to Facility policy.
Maintains inventory levels and accurate records.
- Performs weekly inspections of all sterile items in the Facility
- Checks for outdated items and package integrity of wrapped sterilized items; replaces items as necessary.
- Places items in correct location according to established organizational protocols.
- Maintains adequate inventory of supplies for the sterile processing area.
- Maintains and updates the instrument tray inventory list.
- Maintains current information regarding routine preference cards.
Other duties as assigned
Position Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- CST certification preferred
- Two years previous sterilization experience preferred
- Good communication skills and ability to work well within a team
- Experience and ability to be accountable for vendor tray drop off and pick up
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Excellent customer service skills and ability to lead and work well with other members of the sterile processing team.
- Knowledge and demonstrated understanding of sterilization principles, standard concepts, practices, and procedures within sterile processing
- Ability to respond effectively to emergencies, actual events or drills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient and employee information
- Professional demeanor
- Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the Operatory team regarding sterile processing needs and be able to problem solve challenges that may arise
