Hawaii Farmers Union United (HFUU) is seeking a Chief Operating Officer. HFUU is a growing network of farmers, organizations, foodies, and communities that support, educate and advocate for Hawaii’s family farmers and a vibrant local agriculture. HFUU has 16 Chapters throughout Hawaii.
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for overseeing the HFUU operations, including financial, programing and organizational aspects. The COO reports to the President of the Board and is responsible for supporting their work on behalf of HFUU and its Chapters. HFUU is seeking an experienced COO to continue the organization’s strong record of accomplishment, and to lead its growth and development into the future. The position includes travel throughout the state.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Organizational Management
- Provide thoughtful and visionary leadership that is inclusive, transparent, and empowering in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Board.
- Establish goals, objectives, and operational plans in collaboration with the Board of Directors, staff, and other leaders.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization and ensure its overall success.
- Organize, motivate, and mentor internal team leaders to strategically grow the organization’s impact, programs, fundraising, and to effectively fulfill its important mission.
- Attend all Board meetings and provide reports and updates on all current work, project timelines, and project and organizational progress.
Financial Management and Administration
- Lead and oversee the fiscal integrity of the organization.
- Provide strategic leadership and hands-on management for all of the administrative and operational functions of the organization in accordance with the mission, objectives, and policies.
- Prudently direct resources and manage all financials within budget guidelines and according to current laws and regulations.
- Work with CFOs to monitor board-approved budget and grants. Manage daily financial operations to ensure maximum utilization of resources and optimum financial positioning for the organization.
- Identify and develop business initiatives to advance the organization.
External Relations and Communications
- Represent the organization publicly at events, conferences, and partnership meetings.
- Present and promote the organization and its mission, programs, partners, and members in a consistently positive manner.
- Manage and support the HFUU Communications Team and support all aspects of the organization’s key messaging, marketing and branding.
- Support and grow HFUU’s relationships with other organizations. Work with the President to assure compliance with NFU requests and coordinate in the selection of HFUU representatives to other organizations and assignments to represent HFUU at meetings and conferences.
- Support HFUU Convention, Legislative Opening Day, and HFUU exhibits at conferences and events.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Candidates may emerge from nonprofit, foundation, government or agriculture backgrounds and should possess the following:
- At least five years prior experience in nonprofit or organization management required at a nonprofit, foundation, government or in the agriculture industry. Strong business acumen and history of providing visionary leadership at the executive level. Experience in upper management is preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in business, communications, non-profit management, or related field required. Graduate degree in any of these fields is highly desirable.
- Proven experience executing organization growth and leading a similar or larger size successful nonprofit and/or related entity.
- Familiarity with diverse functions such as Marketing, Public Relations, Human Resources.
- Experience and success in motivating, recruiting, developing, retaining, and mentoring high performance, mission-driven, and results-oriented teams.
- Excellent written, oral, and public speaking skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with strong interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.
- Understanding and experience of Hawaii food systems is highly desired.
- Ability to travel occasionally – throughout Hawaii and the continental US.

Compensation
The annual salary range for this position is $70,000-90,000 (commensurate with experience). HFUU offers benefits including health insurance and paid leave.
