SCHOOL NURSE POSITION BEGININNG AUGUST 2024
Reports to: Principal and Coordinator of Nursing Services
Qualifications:
-
RN with a valid Massachusetts nursing license required. DESE school nurse certification preferred.

Knowledge of and ability to adhere to DESE and DPH school health standards and regulations.

Experience with children with special needs; experience in school, pediatric, public health, or other relevant nursing setting preferred.

Proficient with technology and ability to easily learn new programs, including Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and SchoolBrains.

Ability to multitask and prioritize tasks based on immediate needs.

Effective verbal, written and nonverbal communication skills.
Responsibilities:
-
Administer medication in compliance with school policy and state regulations.
-
Triage student and/or staff with injury or illness and provide appropriate intervention and follow-up. Communicate with emergency medical service personnel when they respond to on-site emergency situations.

Provide everyday care of acutely ill children; manage children with communicable disease until they may be dismissed to parent or emergency contact.

Collaborate with administration and act as part of the crisis triage team.

Maintain updated medical records for each student enrolled in the program including immunizations and screenings. Document student visits to the nurse's office indicating the nature of visit and treatment.

Work with students’ parents/guardians, sending districts, family physicians, the SEEM Collaborative physician and the local board of health in ensuring that students’ immunizations are up-to-date and annual examinations and screenings are documented in health records.

Develop and maintain, when appropriate, an individualized health care plan for each student with documented health needs.

Assist with procurement of prescribed medications, doctors orders and school health records.

Initiate, perform, and oversee all state-mandated screening programs for designated grade levels including vision, hearing, postural screening, and BMIs.

Prepare reports for school officials, MDPH and other agencies describing the services provided by the program, number students served, etc.

Communicate school policies and health regulations to parents and other school personnel.

Consult with school administrators and school physician in the revision of policies and procedures specific to the health of the student population.

Act as a nurse educator for students, parents, and staff regarding a health issue. Collaborates with staff in the development, implementation, and delivery of school health programs. Modifies the educational program to meet the health and emotional needs of individual students.

Consult to staff around medication, hygiene issues, nutrition education, etc.

Identify community resources for appropriate referrals. Assist with scheduling vaccination clinics.

Maintain First Aid CPR trainer certification and provide training for school staff in First Aid, CPR, epi-pen, seizure protocols, field trip medication delegation

Carry out communicable disease prevention and infection control based on current guidelines for universal precautions, prevention of bloodborne pathogen exposure and hazardous waste disposal.

Collaborate with administration around school safety and assists with implementation of emergency plans and training for staff.

Maintain nursing office supplies and equipment.
-
Stay current with best practices. Participates in professional development in relevant areas.

Other duties as assigned by the school principal.
