The City of Stoughton Utilities Journeyman Lineworker position offers a regular work schedule* that allows you to be home in the evenings and half-day Fridays.

You will be working within the City of Stoughton and our service area. There will be no long commute for you as our service area is the City of Stoughton and the surrounding townships, comprised of approximately 55 square miles. There will be no overnights unless there is an emergency or you are attending training and/or seminars, etc. This position requires you to live within a thirty-minute response time to the City of Stoughton Utilities facility.
*Your regular schedule will include rotating standby responsibilities that you are compensated for. During the weeks you are on standby, you will be required to respond to after-hours electrical calls after regular work hours. Outside of regular work hours and rotating stand-by, your assistance may be requested when others are on stand-by if level of response is warranted. The volume of standby calls is generally low as Stoughton Utilities prides itself on a high level of maintenance and system reliability/resiliency. The position is categorized as Essential. If there is an “all call” due to a large emergency, you may be called upon.
The purpose of this position is to perform electrical distribution line construction, maintenance, and repair tasks while communicating and working as part of a team. The ideal candidate would be a self-motivated, responsible individual. This job requires extended periods in the field, accessing work areas by foot, ladder, elevated platform, etc.
A High School diploma or equivalent is required, and completion of a four-year electrical lineman apprenticeship, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities. A valid Wisconsin Driver’s license and CDL with tanker and airbrake certification is required. Also required are certification for forklift, CPR, first aid, and Hilti gun.
The duties for this position include but are not limited to, operating loaders, backhoes, dump trucks, jackhammers, bucket trucks, wood chippers, chain saws, diggers, cutting torch, and welder.
The person in this position will operate hand tools near and around electrical distribution lines; operate live-line tools to connect and disconnect distribution lines and components; as well as operate and maintain the electric SCADA system. They will prepare work sites; erect warning signs and secure work areas; as well as maintain knowledge of and implement safety procedures. This person will be responsible for locating underground electric cable faults for repair; installing primary and secondary overhead and underground electrical systems; participating in on-call status for emergencies; planning and directing on-site maintenance/repair tasks; and recommending on-site operational changes.
Candidate must have the ability to communicate, establish, and maintain effective working relationships with the public, Stoughton Utilities team members, and other City of Stoughton employees. They must also be able to take direction, facilitate communication, resolve problems, and work individually as well as part of a team.
This is a full-time, non-exempt position. The starting hourly rate for this position is $52.94 with an excellent benefits package.
