What you’ll get to do
Mechanical Design Engineer (Job Code MDEWEB)
Evaluate and improve upon designs in manufacturing systems including the development of engineering applications utilizing robotic systems technologies interacting with production operators, including resistance welding; MIG welding; projection welding; Drawn Arc Welding; Sealer and Adhesive Application; Flow Drills; and Self-piercing Rivets. Program analysis resulting in the creation of timelines and detailed content documents required by the Mechanical Design Engineering department related to customers’ Body in White (BIW) automated production equipment and systems. Reviewing and assessing customer specifications, engineering schematics and other data to determine the design procedures needed to generate drawings and computer aided design (CAD) models related to the engineering and manufacturing requirements. Developing advanced design engineering solutions relative to novel equipment, process, and product development to existing tooling lines, translating them into modified or new applications to improve manufacturability, maintainability, and serviceability. Providing design engineering changes based on ease of manufacturing, cost and time saving, and customer specifications utilizing CAD software such as Catia, Unigraphics, Ford-FIDES, AutoCAD, and Solidworks. Interfacing with tooling suppliers to provide engineering data and information, to validate and otherwise verify latest equipment technologies supplied functions to the customers” production, quality, and timing requirements. Performing necessary root cause identification, engineering calculations and proper material selection to satisfy the required design functionality. Error proofing the safety and operational engineering for “Geo” locating fixture and the related “Geo” pallet where the operator is manually loading parts. Leading daily touchpoint meetings to monitor the program progress relative to managing the development flow of the engineering Bill of Material (BOM), layout and part drawings to ensure the on-time delivery of deliverables from the mechanical design team. Performing tasks related to the release systems and procedures, including releases of all the necessary detail drawings, layout drawings and CAD models per established requirements of the internal and external customers (for example the release to the Purchasing Department for procurement decision, input for controls design and engineering, and documents to support field installation and service personnel, direct digital transfers to customer systems). Approving workflow and engineering release in the “Teamcenter” platform after ensuring the accuracy and compliance to requirements of uploaded drawings, CAD files, and equipment deliverable indices such as quantity, due date, shipping location and structure tree. “Teamcenter” is a proprietary Ford Supplier Business Integration platform supporting product data and manufacturing management system used by Ford and Ford suppliers such as Valiant relative to applications, methods and tools required to support the Digital Product Creation. Developing a design engineering library of standard items to reduce redundancy and increase efficiency in timing as well as cost. Developing designs relative to material handling methods as applied to automated production systems including but not limited to robotic transfer, lift and carry transfer, pick and place transfer, and AGV (automated guided vehicle) transfer systems. Developing innovative solutions utilizing the latest technologies (AGV, collaborative robots, MFDC (mid-frequency direct current) welding, drawn arc welding, etc.), taking in to consideration cost, timing and equipment efficiency to provide the best engineering solutions to satisfy customers’ requirements. Working with equipment designers and manufacturing officers to develop cost-effective and working production design, requiring a comprehensive engagement with the suppliers of the latest equipment technologies to verify and validate that their products will function in a way to satisfy the customers’ needs relative to quality, and automated production volume and timing. Undertaking scoping study level trade-off evaluations of design alternatives with responsibility for developing multiple designs for the same project to determine which design is the best solution for the customer, taking into account cost, timing, technology, machine efficiency, and operator efficiency considerations. Supporting and performing tasks associated with aerospace and automotive related advanced design engineering projects in the area of system design, build, prototyping, testing and applications of Industry 4.0 enablers for digitalization of manufacturing. Developing technological applications with internal and external customers and translate them into new product development or new avenues of providing value-added services. Performing necessary problem and root cause identification, engineering calculations and proper material and design selection to satisfy the required design functionality. Developing new solutions using a value engineering approach to promote unique selling propositions for the Company to be a strong competitor in the aerospace and automotive businesses. Providing detailed technical proposals for advanced design engineering projects, outlining a project approach to achieve the objective, inclusive of design steps.
