Senior Mortgage Underwriter

The focus of an underwriter is to provide sound risk evaluation of mortgage applications while always putting the client first. Primary Duties:
1. Underwrite Conventional and FHA/VA mortgage applications.
2. Meet or exceed current production standards for an Underwriter.
3. Run various AUS programs, review findings and clear conditions.
4. Thorough understanding of underwriting fundamentals and able to implement changing overlays to ensure quality files that meet secondary market investor guidelines.
5. Review and analyze complex financial statements, personal and corporate tax returns.
6. Review credit worthiness, assets, income, sale contracts, appraisal, title and supporting documents in accordance with agency and/or investor guidelines.
7. Issue denials and/or counter offers in accordance with compliance regulations.
8. Prioritize workflow to meet deadlines.
9. Maintain or exceed established timeframes for workflow.
10. Work closely with Mortgage Bankers and Processors to find solutions as needed.
11. Perform due diligence on all borrowers, their employment and subject property and investigate loan file for any fraudulent activity.
12. Executing an appraisal analysis to determine that acceptable collateral standards are met, while completing the necessary research to determine federal, state and company compliance.
13. Assist post-closing with any additional documentation or clarification required by investor at purchase.
14. Actively participate and advocate the bank’s training and development programs and commitment to learning.
15. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to handle delicate situations with diplomacy and tact.
16. Adaptability and Candor: You will be working with some of the newest technology in the mortgage industry. As it evolves, we will expect your feedback to improve our products.
17. Maintain strong knowledge and understanding of Agency and Investor requirements along with compliance issues.
18. Responsible for following company policies and procedures as directed. Never employ workarounds to procedures or policies.
19. Be relentlessly resourceful in finding answers.
20. Strong government loan knowledge base to include some of the following loan types – FHA/VA/MSHDA/RD.
21. Willing and able to assist and direct underwriters for training on new products.
22. Continue training to remain consistently up to date with agency/investor requirements.
23. Work closely with underwriting team to ensure consistency and accuracy with file conditions.
24. Respond to Helpdesk questions and scenario reviews in a timely manner as directed.
25. Maintain strong positive communication with all departments to develop cohesive working relationships.
26. Underwrite the more difficult and complicated mortgages.
27. All other duties as assigned.
28. Adheres to all Federal and State laws and regulations, including the Bank Secrecy Act.

Education/Training: College Degree
Experience: 5-10 years of prior mortgage loan processing experience including experience with web based automated underwriting systems, loan origination systems and working with correspondent lenders preferred. Experience with government loan programs.
